Hi

I am after some suggestions . My wife and i with our two late teenage sons are going to fly into Sydney in July and drive to Melbourne over 10 days and fly out.
We haven't been to the snow before but we wont be skiing just want to enjoy the scenery. We have never been to NSW ,so which is the best way to drive ,down the coast or around the on the M31. Do you recommend any must see places.

I see this is your first post Rik672001, so I just want to say welcome to the Australian Coin Forum.
I'm from the other side of the country so I can't advise you on that question, but I'm sure someone will
be along shortly. :)

There's not that much to see on the Hume Hwy - take the coast road. Be careful if you are driving in snowy conditions.

I live in Brisbane and have never been further south than Sydney, and even that was not a pleasure trip. I'm sure there will be plenty others that can advise you.

Welcome Rik.

I have done the Sydney to Mel trip many times. .. it depends on what you would like to do over the 10days. Costal road is fun if you want to take time and do the scenic tour. .. place like Sale, Entrance are some nice places to unwind and relax... let us know more about your planned trip and othere can help as well..

I am coming down from Darwin. I have just been looking at the prices of tickets and to get us down and back is nearly 3k . I can do Bali for for less than 1k. Having second thoughts at the moment.

Yes, it will be expensive to travel within Australia.. people on this side of the world can go to US and back for cheaper than going to Perth. However Mel trip is worth the money. If you plan in advance you can get good deals. (BTW you are half way to bali already... much longer flight to Sydney or Melb )

understand the costs
if you get to Sydney
drive over to Canberra - have a look see at the Mint and other stuff, head down the highway Tumut way, even Selwyn has a small snowfield/s which are great fun for beginners - easier to get to them Kosciusko
or head back Cooma Kosciusko way, then over the coast road to Melbourne
or back Tumut way, see some snow , through albury wadonga ballarat etc down to Melbourne town

Silly question, why not drive? There's loads to see along the way.. even the boring flat red bits that go on forever have a certain charm, and the crowds are easy to avoid. ;) Oh, and I hear the lakes are filling fast, so that should be a sight to behold.

I've done half of that trip, up to Woomera and Andamooka, then back to Port Augusta and up the other side to Roxby Downs/Olympic Dam and Lyndhurst. Plenty of fond memories from that.. much more memorable than the many, many trips up and down the east coast, especially in the bleak winter months.

I thought that driving from Darwin to Melbourne with 4 in the car might get a bit boring - you would have to spend a lot of time each day on the road. Whereas if you go from Sydney to Melbourne via the coast (inc. a Snowy Mountains detour) you can drive a few hours each day, stop and stretch your legs more often.

I will say it again be careful driving in bad weather, you might find that some roads are unsafe without snow chains etc.

:yeah_that:

I'm not saying the alps aren't cool, nor am I saying the coast road isn't pretty. But in winter??? You can't go in the water like you can in summer, and its going to cost you to get into the snowfields, plus you need gear you'll probably only use once anyway, plus it could get rather hairy.

That's why I'd head south then east, visit some less extreme snowfields in Vic, and if you're up for it, drive north along the coast. Overall cost will be much lower too, depending on accommodation.

The other issue is time. Is this a week, a month or a year? The NSW south coast is gorgeous.. in spring/summer. But is 6 months outside the timeframe?

The wife thought it would be great if the family could do some snow together but as i add up the costs it seems a bit over the top. I will do it maybe next year and after some suggestions here i think going down the coast is the way to go but i would like to see Canberra. Bali again this year, it is just like holidaying in Australia anyway with all us Aussies there.
