I suppose it's try to proving who did it as they might have been bought off either feebay, facebook or maybe even an anda show and gone through a few sets of hands but with some tracking and threats of gaol they'd soon find out.

Regardless of who did what, Whoever has it at the moment has stolen property in their possession .
I am pretty sure that we have laws that make this illegal .

true but then do the feds want to do anything about it as there's heaps of sales of fake coins on facebook and ebay that they don't worry about.

This whole "Error" market is riddled with "Mint Sport" and not only in Aus.
The US and Canadian mint has the same problem with their employees
"Spiriting away" created "Errors".
The people that make and steal these from their particular mint are NO different than the counterfeiters that everyone hates.
Just because these pieces of Crap are created in a government controlled Mint by dodgy individuals doesn't make them "Kosher" :ok:
People like Goldie who noodled about 2.5 million coins to find a few "Real" errors are probably appalled at the people  at a mint that can create an error in 5 min :dodgy:

the mint used to be stricter and I think that explanation might be that a lot of dodgey production staff as being to expire and the kids are selling dad's hoard of interesting errors and laughing all the way to the bank

my coin dealer is ex RAM and he has been getting really upset when he finds out about these errors and he knows who they are attributed to - he gets upset that he didn't know the true character of that employee & they were busy flogging stuff

but in credit to the original owners, they seem to have not done this for economic gain as the coins aren't surfacing until after they have died

I doubt that the police could charge a person posthumous but they could confiscate but seem to turn a blind eye these days

I am surprised that RAM hasn't demanded the return of these and laid charges against the sellers.

Maybe yes and maybe no. Short of an admission by the crook that they have done something wrong we cannot be certain that a genuine boo boo didn't occur. Tired staff, odd shifts, striking lots of NCLT coins, drug and alcohol use etc etc could all lead to mistakes in putting the wrong die in. The 2000 mule is evidence of this sort of goof.

gnome

Your correct that thing can happen. However it is the story of the way they left the mint that pretty much confirms they were not a mistake.

robbiegal

what is that story?

the old in the bottom of the boot trick?

gnome

not quite, inserted internally so the story goes.
