QuoteComputer programmer.

What language ? I'd love to get more into object oriented programming, but really enjoy cobol because it is so easy!

Mister T

C/C++ and Python at the moment. The last job was all Java.

Are you using COBOL for legacy reasons? I got the impression it didn't have widespread use these days (at least beyond systems written decades ago).

Do you work for yourself or do you have a real job?  You do any web programming (.NET or php or javascript?).

Today one of the staff at our local Bunnings tried to charge me rent for the spot I was standing on because I've been spending so much time in the wood screw / nuts and bolts aisle over the last week.

They did not, you just like it there because of the industrial air conditioner (top of 44 deg today -the air con and the solar panels are fighting it out!)

They did so.  At one point I'd been standing still so long a staff member put witches hats around me so the floor sweeper wouldn't run me over.

Pretty much.
It is still very widely used and probably accounts for a lot of code still running production across the world, and to me it best suits the processing it is used for in our shop.
In any case my opinion is that the quality of applications does not rely on what code its written in, mostly because good coders cost too much!

I recall reading something along the lines of this once :
Obsolete computer hardware sits in a musuem
Obsolete computer software runs production :)

I have a real job.
I've never done any web stuff for work but I have learnt it. Never done any .NET though.

Yeah I thought so. Someone said to me once a lot of bank back-end stuff was in COBOL because that's what it had always been.
I guess it's not quite obsolete if it works.
