Not necessarily Runway old Mate.
I may not have thousands but I do have hundreds of Canberra Florins and I am most definitely a Collector .
But I do agree with you that people that hoard coins that they never even look at are not collectors they are investors.
Nothing Wrong with either , Whatever rocks your boat is good

The rationale is quite simple, actually.

We have no idea how many of a given coin are minted until 18 months later, when the two (or more) half year reports are in.

Condition is everything, as the slabbies well know.

So there is no option but to grab every UNC sack possible, and stash it away until the numbers are in. If it turns out to be a high-mintage year, then its time to noodle them for errors before returning them to the pond.

And if something does turn out to be low mintage or otherwise desirable, how does having more than one make someone any less of a collector?

The point is collectors don't buy sacks of coins, even if they choose to,there is no way to anyway

I buy rolls and multiples of various coins all the time and I consider myself a "collector".
In the "Quest" to find that perfect coin you have to look at many coins,
I normally only get the best of what I find graded and as a result I have Hundreds of coins in saflips stored away in ziplocks .
One day I will sell/give these away but at the moment they are doing no harm where they are and one day they may be a blessing to a collector that needs an uncirculated coin for his/her collection.

Just like all the people that hold onto large numbers of a certain coin they are actually doing the collecting community a favour by keeping these coins out of circulation and maintaining the coin in great condition for future collectors also :good:

I don't think Runway is talking about people with a few rolls, a hundred parliament florins, and hundreds (or thousands) of coins that don't really have a strong theme (hey that sounds like my collection).

He's talking about people who put away a thousand 2010 dollar coins, or spend $5000 on purple $2 coins or whatever.  And I agree with him, people like that are not "collecting" those coins, they are speculating with them.

That pretty much describes my collections as well.

I have to agree with you there :ok:
Don't these "Speculators" Realise that when they do decide to sell these huge hoards the prices will tumble because they will flood the market .
Everyone to there own but Personally I would rather spend 5K on some seriously numismatic coins than a whole batch of "Fetish" coins
That eventually the "Fad" will fade out on
