Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Things have changed (track, cars etc) just a tad since then haven't they?

Good find, long while since i've seen that clip.

I was at Bathurst Easter weekend every year from late 60's until mid 70's -practice and race days. Had a job that gave access to the track side of the spectator fence and camped inside the circuit, behind the pits.
It has changed a lot since then (especially safety aspects) but, even then, was much different to what you see in the 1960 clip.

Regardless it is a scary circuit to drive.

That ABC newsreel took me back Jeff. I watched that race from McPhillamy? park. Took a lovely shot of Arnold Glass drifting the Maserati through the curve, he was really trying! The car was canted at about 15deg nose into the clipping point, back wheels on oversteer, front wheels slight understeer. I panned that shot perfectly with the road surface giving a reference point to judge the angles. Was using Kodak TRI-X? B/W. Wish I still had the negs or any prints, probably the best shot I ever took.
Fast forward 40 years, I had Bathurst of that era loaded into my GPL simulator, (chassis seat with pitch, roll and bump actuators, steering wheel, gearshift, seat belts, 8 channel audio the full kit but another story). Have driven the old circuit at slow speed in a sedan and going over the top gave me that funny feeling in my ring , if you know what I mean. In the simulator I did reasonable lap times but the narrow width of the track just scared me too much. A bit like a mixture of Monaco for the tightness and Spa for flat out bits.  When you come off skyline you cannot see where you are going so just had to do it by muscle memory. Hats off to anyone that actually raced there at any speed! Not for me.
Fred.

Fred,
I have driven that track quite a few time over the years and it is quite exciting even at the legal speed. So I do know what you mean.
I have probably walked it as many times as driving it. Late on the eve of the race a crew of us souveniring sponsors signs. You had to get in quick before some other ratbags got them! It helped to have a vehicle trailing you to stash the signs as you went along the way.
