the son works in a grog shop
he knocked back the offer of a shift for today even though penalty rates apply - apparently it gets pretty ugly as the day goes by

they even opened the doors early at 7.00 am for today's shoppers!

Happy Australia Day everyone.

Todays activities included a bushwalk and a G'day to 4 koalas we awakened in the trees. If that's not bloody Australian I dunno what is!

One of the koalas we spotted is below.  Note that he is not burning meat, cracking a tinny, playing cricket, or at the beach.  I question his Australianess.

We don't have any of them cute little buggers here in the West But I do have an ever growing family of Kangaroos that often graze my back lawn not 5 meters from the house.
I will have to get a photo one day and post it .

Hats off to all the hard working Australians who made this country a place people can call home with pride !

I'm working today, gotta keep you mischievous buggers in line.
These days even though it is a Public Holiday, even though we are working outside normal hours (evening shift) and even though we are working overtime we only get the standard hourly rate. We are not even allowed to have a single drink until the 27th.
What happened to this country?

I'd be getting a new shop steward  to change things a bit.   A NATIONAL PUBLIC HOLIDAY and no penalty rates for working it.   NO WAY.

I know the Americans think kangaroos bound down our city streets (picture hopping across the Sydney Harbour Bridge) but I had no idea you'd find such wildlife in the city and suburbs. Certainly not of what I know from growing up in the far east. Since moving to Adelaide (just gone 4 years now) you can find Koalas in the trees just a few hundred metres away from our place. They have been known to wander down the streets, hang in the trees, get cranky in neighbouring backyards in the middle of the night and even a mum and bub walked across the asphalt at the kids school last year. Amazing they are so close.

Hello,

We do get them in Canberra. They come right into the suburbs. I hit one on a major road in peak hour traffic.

On the freeway here in Adelaide right after the tunnel as you head out of the city there's a concrete barrier, perhaps about 4 feet high, that separates the 6 lanes of traffic.  One day I was coming down there in the middle of the day and in the distance I could see a police car on either side of the barrier with the lights going and four policemen out of their cars.  A bit odd because they were in the middle of the road.  As I got closer I could see there was a koala perched on top of the concrete barrier and the four boys (and girls) in blue were doing their best to corral the furry critter so he didn't wander into 6 lanes of traffic.

Unicorn

I caught a full sized one wandering around the streets in Port Macquarie. Despite using a towel to try and hold it's arms and legs at bay I still ended up with huge cuts down both arms.

I managed to get it safely to a large gum tree.

Crikey they're strong!

No one yet has mentioned the wombats, blue tongued lizards or the sugar bats, (flying foxes).   We get them here just on the outskirts of Melbourne.

I have a couple of blue tongue lizards in my yard and there's a family of possums in my ceiling, but they might get evicted when my new roof goes on.

We had a pair of smooth head doves nesting at the back of the house but the female was hit by a car and now the male just sits calling for her. A pair of pee-wees also nested on one of our water pipes and they managed to hatch one baby, but we found it dead on the ground and it was a real new hatchling.

Gecko's by the dozen, mostly in the garage and a few in the house. Crikey they pass a lot of poo for such little lizards.

Plenty of blue tongues in a number of Sydney suburbs, what the heck are sugar bats? Here in Sydney I see fruit bats (flying foxes) every week, sometimes see a few thousand fly overhead.
The only wombats in Sydney are the 2 legged kind (eats, roots and leaves) and they are in plague proportions..

Before my Daughters last move she had a blue tongue living in the tray under her fridge. When the lizard wanted to go outside it would walk to the door and just wait till someone opened it. Same thing when it wanted back in.

Hope the new tenants are animal lovers.
