Quote from: 'Tanecoins' pid='129268' dateline='1717381581'Irish Predecimals I collect quite a bit.

I see them infrequently, especially the farthings and any coin before 1943.
In 5 years I have accumulated most of the post 1950 base metal material, but only the following in silver

Halfcrowns - 1928, 1933, 1939, 1940, 1941
Floirins - 1928 (That first year was a big issue of coins and easy to get), 1940, 1942 (Seriously, that tough)
Shilling 1928, 1933 (Very worn), 1940 and 1942
Ten Shilling coin 1966

I also collect the later coins too and have most of the Pennies, but not halfpence or farthings.

In addition, I collect the pre 1928 material, but only have a 1723 Woods Halfpenny, 1766 (Worn flat) and a decent 1805 and 1822 Halfpennies (Hibernias).
I still need five more dates to have a full set of PCGS graded Irish Farthings. It has taken me years to collect the thirteen dates I have and it will probably take me years to get a 1931,1940,1941,1943 and a 1966 in PCGS MS64 or better.

Pics are not ideal.
But I cant see any reason it wont grade at PCGS.
63RB or maybe 64RB on a good day.

spraggdean23

Thanks Echidna. I purchased it hopefully it will grade MS64RB.

Does anyone know what the grading standards are like at PCGS China? I purchased a 1966 Irish Threepence in PCGS MS66 and a 1966 Irish Sixpence in PCGS MS67 from a seller in China. I assume he/she got them graded at the PCGS Office in China rather than Hong Kong. The Certificate Verification numbers start with 8.

Mister T

I've heard their grading is more relaxed but that was just someone else's opinion - I've never had a good look myself.

Tanecoins

I would say that many of the Irish coins have survived in better condition than some other countries. They only had silver for 3 denominations between 1928 and 1943 and replaced them quickly with cupro nickel. So the worst I have seen one of their coins is VG and thats mostly shillings and florins issued before 1940.

The average Irish coin made out of nickel, cupro nickel or bronze survives in at least VF or better. You get some Fine pennies of the pre 1942 era, but that is about it. This would be one of my nastiest and most worn.

This would be a cusp of Good to VG and believe I got this cheap in some collection of miscellaneous world back in the 2010s when I was just starting to collect. I have kept it as its a historic and cool piece.

This set I got here a few months ago, was quite cheap and I decided to keep it in its case (Easily openable) as its a nice souvenir thing. It contains a 1969 sixpence along with 1968 shilling and penny, the latest dates possible for predecimal.

All are basically uncirculated and I believe the 1969 sixpence was the only predecimal coin dated that year from Ireland, when they actually issued new 5p, 10p and 50p coins dated that year too.

Dates on the coins - 2/- is 1966, 1/- 1968, 6d 1969, 3d 1965 and 1d 1968, (I think the Halfcrown and Halfpenny were goneburgers by then)

Decimal coins - 50p - 1974, 10p - 1973, 5p - 1978, 2p and 1p - 1978 and ½p is 1976.

Hi Tanecoins nice set comprising of some Irish Pre-Decimal and Irish Decimal coins. Stacks Bowers in the U.S.A have recently listed a Publio Morbiducci Pattern Penny for sale. It is graded PF61BN by NGC. The auction estimate is $5000US to $7000US. I wish I could afford it.

Tanecoins

I wish I could afford it too. One guy on Numista has a 1943 Halfcrown though. The coin is holed, and the guy who has it, I really don't like as he is a racist.

Its on Numista in the Ireland coins chat thread.
