I was looking through a bulk lot of New Zealand coins and I found two upset (11 o'clock) 1999 5c pieces. Is that normal? Does anyone else have any 1999 5c pieces to check?

Nevol

I'm pretty sure I have one and a chap on the NZCCA Forum explained that it was due to the 1999 coins being minted in Sth Africa and the SA Mint put the date in the wrong place, and as a consequence the 5c coins all appear to be 'upset', or something to that effect.

But....please don't quote me on this, my memory is not reliable. :dodgy:

Ah thanks Nevol. I think your explanation is more believable than me being that lucky.

I noodled a 1999 NZ 5c several weeks ago, and noticed the same problem. Does anyone have any further information about it?

Nevol

I have no recollection of the post I did above, and have no clue as to what the NZCCA is.

I do have a couple NZ 1999 5c, and they do appear to be 'upset' . My images were done in Aug 2015.

I stumbled over this site: http://www.coinerrors.co.nz/wordpress/new-zealand-decimal/10-cent/

Looks interesting. The 1999 5c shown do all look the same, so I think the 'upset' is just normal for them.

I've come across a few more since my first post - might need to check again but I think most (maybe not all) were upset.

That is definitely normal,as from 2000,the 5 Cents was aligned correctly.

Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

The 2025 catalogue does not mention that error, but cuds, dripping 5's and even a wart on the Queens nose.

Could be quite common as I found 2 coins slightly off kilter alignment.
If it helps, 1999 was the first year of the Rank Broadley effigy and it may have been teething problems.
