I do agree that some grass roots collectors missed out, and certainly not that others were able to secure multiple issues, but I also don't believe this seller is an idiot, and certainly is no fool. They have attracted plenty of interest going by the three offers and number of watchers so far, and who's to say what interest this errant action by the Mint as evidenced by the alleged invoice stuff up may attract 50 years down the track. No different to many bazar items now selling for big dollars at auction. IMHO the only party at fault here is the RAM for being so amateurish in the control and monitoring of the whole process. Hell, I'm sounding like the seller, no no no not me!!
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

I beg to differ trout. If an item increases in value and someone sells it for a profit that is fine with me. It dosnt matter if it is a penny bought by grandma in 1930 during a tour of the mint or a coin bought today via ballot
If there is more demand than supply it is natural for there to be an upward price movement on the item and and it is typically Australian to have a tall poppy attitude about people profiteering from a wise or lucky investment
If we held your standard to all numismatic items then I would have no right to ask more than the issue price for the 34/35 florin I recently got graded or I would be profiteering by your standard. I am not selling that coin for 30c would you?
I think a more healthy attitude to take is to say "gee I wish I had bought in on that issue" and move on.
I know I wish I had bought a 2000 VC cross $1 coin when they issued them, but I didn't so, I have to pay what it is worth today if I want one
I certainly dont fault the people who bought lots of them. I saw 1 ebay sale for a box of 10! Gee i wish i had done that!

BIN price has been jacked up to $25,000.  Seller must think with 8 'watchers' he might as well go for broke.

Let's all watch it to give him with false hope.

Might end up $100k! :P

I am not saying that ALL coins are only worth the issue value at all.
I AM concerned that this particular Coin was marketed as a one per person (If lucky enough to win the ballot) coin and many sellers have sold multiples of these.
I feel sorry for the collectors that wanted one of these and are being forced to pay ridicules prices because quite a few people "Rorted" the ballot purely for profit.
I have NO problem with people hoarding coins Because in the long run there will be plenty of high quality coins available, The Canberra florin is a great example of this .
I don't care what other people pay for a coin, I will only pay what I think the coin is worth and ignore the "Hype" that accompanies them :ok:
Having said that I am guilty of paying exorbitant prices for some of the 25mm $1 I need to complete my collection and I am GOOD with that because the coins I needed WERE very low mintage and hard to get.

I think a lot of people got shocked at how much they went up in value and people who may not have sold theirs did so because of the profit that was to be had. hence why the price went down so quick after it peaked, a sudden oversupply. however it seems to be stabilising now that supply is reducing. Yes there was a few people who "professionally" smashed the ballot and got several items but they are not as common as you think, they are simply more visible.
on the subject of high grade Canberra florins I don't think they are as common as you say as, whilst they got hoarded, they also got poorly stored and commonly cleaned. so it is easy to get one that is uncirculated but they are usually problem coins that are upgradable. I am buying as many MS graded 27's as possible as I don't think the MS population will increase that much due to the aforementioned issues.

HeHeHe
I have been doing that for quite some time now
Interestingly the low end MS and AU 55-58 coins form the favourite part of my collection of these.

Here is the RAM'sesponse to my email re the double issue to one person:

Good afternoon Mr xxxxxxxx,

The Royal Australian Mint is restricted under privacy legislation from providing details regarding specific customers and their orders. We are also unable to control what claims people may make on the secondary market, for instance eBay. If you believe the 'error' term is misleading, we suggest you contact eBay.

As the seller of this particular item is forthcoming with information, we suggest perhaps request that the customer provides the original 'offer to purchase' emails which were sent, which along with a unique code also included the name of the successful ballot entrant. In addition to the two individual receipts already provided.

Kind regards,

Customer Service Team

Getting the TRUTH from RAM is akin to trying to squeeze Blood from a stone.

be fair for God's sake

"privacy legislation from providing details regarding specific customers and their orders."  that legislation is very real for government
"We are also unable to control what claims people may make on the secondary market, for instance eBay"

Duck shoving again or just not wanting to provide a suitable answer? This response would have very likely been run by the government solicitor before being sent

the RAM doesn't have to be explaining to an e-mail as to why some dork on ebay has his listing set up the way he has it - lies or not and going by the price I lean towards the former, nor do they have to be explaining willy nilly if there was a double posting glitch - no sales system is with out fault - that is the stuff that quality control works out and it takes time to sort those things out

sometimes I find the RAM criticisms very narrow minded and ridiculously unfair
the very business that you all on one hand, revere,  seems to be spoken about as if they are all just a bunch of idiots with poor appreciation shown for of all of the work that goes on before today and after today and as well that they have to be reporting to the public as if the public were their boss, well guys most government businesses now are very self sufficient and the government is the face but not as much the funder, I assure you, so forget the public servant mentality - I suppose that for myself, being a Canberra public servant now (and a Queensland one before that) I am a bit sensitive to that attitude

it just seems to be so contradictory to me
