JRNASH

just after some advice, I've been looking at starting a penny set to add some Pre-decimal to my collection when i came upon this

http://www.sterlingcurrency.com.au/items/complete-set-australian-pennies-1911-1964-75-coins-including-1925-and-1946-ex-1930

Looks like an easy way to gather a near complete set but do you guys think   this is worth it?

Looks good to me, great way to start.  But I'm sure a member might have enough doubles to make a set?

robbiegal

looks like a fair set there JR
gotta start somewhere and you can always go through and upgrade on various years over time

The work has already been done in accumulating the dates but they are low grade. The price seems a bit high so maybe have a look around .Check this one out
which includes halfpennies as well

Its not really collecting if someone else does the work for you, is it now? Kinda like hiring Pat Cash to take your place in the office doubles match. ;)

I am pretty sure that most of the other members have heaps of low/mid grade common Pennys that they could either gift you or let you have them cheap.
Grab a Maccas book ( doesn't have to be the latest edition) and that will guide you about the different mintmarks, dates etc.
Whatever you do DON"T store nice grade coins in them bloody push in albums or some crappy PVC el cheapo binder.
I will have a look through my ice cream tubs and will PM you with what I can find, They won't be top of the wazzer but they will be FREE.
When you get around to upgrading these coins you can always pass them along to another new collector :good:

hi JRNASH
I don't see anything wrong with buying a complete penny set ex the 1930
I bought a few sets when I first started out collecting the pre-decs
and there was no way at that time that I had enough experience to put together the set properly at that time
it takes experience to figure out the k.g's ,  Perth's and Melbourne's etc

suited me fine to get a set and the fiddle about and then start to upgrade
and the push in dansco albums are fine if you are just starting out
it makes you get the set-up the right way, as all the years and mint marks etc are listed against each year , your average circ bronzes will be ok in a dansco

you can upgrade to the supreme dansco album - that has the page where you have a slide across sleeve and you can see both sides to the coin - around 3 times the price but you can sometimes pick them up second hand in good nick

when a friend of mine started collected the pre-decs - I set up a grading album for her
so I had all the monarchs in various grades (that i could afford to give away) so that she could start to teach herself the differences in the grades
you have to handle a fair few pennies to get an eye for the grading

good luck with it - either way have fun
