Mister T

A friend got one for me this week - it seems an RSL somewhere in Brisbane still has unsold coins that they're selling again this year.

Still waiting for mine to arrive from Tassie. Must be coming by Mule Train.
Nah, I only paid for them last Sunday.

The two I purchased all came with the coin in a small sealable plastic back stapled to the backing card.

The Tassie ones just arrived. GLUED!!! Some images follow:

$2 2012 Red Poppy coin glued on Card

$2 2012 Rev Red Poppy on card: Obv now off Card showing glue: rolled off Glue

$2 2012 Red Poppy off Card duo

I don't know what the type of glue is called, but it's commonly used to attach small booklets etc. to Magazines and it can be removed fairly easily as it just rolls or peels off. It does not appear to have left any residue on the coin.

All are attached with the Obv down and each card with attached coin is enclosed in a plastic envelope that I can't determine the composition of, but it's fairly soft, so it'd be a fair guess that it contains PVC.

I will be removing all the coins and storing them separately.

I did say that, didn't I? ;)

Believe it or not, they're called "snot drops" or "snot dots"... or technically, "tack adhesive". The stuff is a pre-formed hot melt glue which doesn't hold shape as it never actually sets, so can't be formed into glue sticks. So they tend to be sold as sticky dots between silicone-coated carrier strips.

The good news is it comes off completely with no residue, and its acid-free. But yeah, I'd be removing them as well. ;)

Fulvio what is your thoughts about the self adhesive mylars 2x2 do they have any long term effects on the coins or is the glue on them inert?

They're safe, but not very good. The adhesive lets go over time. The bigger the coin, the quicker it opens up. 50¢ ones last maybe a week.

I've had success with non-adhesive (staple) 2x2's and a hot iron. Put the coin in, use a couple of bank bags or other smooth material to protect the mount, and heat it starting at the edges. This will melt the mylar together with no detrimental effects. Too much heat and the card will yellow, too much pressure and it will dent, but its just cosmetic. And of course this is a permanent solution, you can't reuse the mounts.

That said, I do prefer to make my own LDPE 2x2's out of bank bags as previously documented.
