I haven't collected these for years, but have only accumulated about 6 of this date. According to Renniks there were 8.25 m minted, but compared to all other dates, reasonably hard to get. I know this is probably old news, but have many of you been able to collect decent quantities.

Havent got any from circulation but I have 7 unc examples from the
red wallets but I am currently saving all of the 5 cent coins that I get in change as
they will probably go out of circulation in the next few years and maybe my
kids will benefit from them down the track.Would have about 5 kg so far

I have found several hundred but that is from many many many coins

I have not looked much because my 1972 is UNC and I collect UNC only.

Still looking for 2009 and 2011 5 cent in UNC condition.
Cheers

I haven't spotted a 72 5c in circulation for 6 years

I rarely spot any 60's and 70's coinage now, but 8 million is a big mintage, with that in mind might as well get the lower mintage NZ coinage.

I keep all 5¢ (and 10¢) from change and put them in a container. When a container is full (about 2.2kg) I sort them out, looking for varieties, scarce years, errors and extra good ones to keep. All the rest are taken back to the bank and cashed in.
I get one or two 1972 5¢ each time. That's about one 1972 per 500 coins. Very rarely do I strike one in good condition -at 40 years old they are usually well worn and marked.

Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

I've found maybe half a dozen while noodling. The mintage may be 8 million but compared to all the 5c minted from 1966 - 2013 it is a small number so they are hard to find.

Also the 5c is a small, low value coin. I would imagine that only a fraction of the original mintage has survived to the present day.

I haven't seen the prices lately but circulated examples of 1972 5c used to sell for around $7 each on eBay.

I can't see why thjis particular coin is rated so highly.   What is an UNC one worth?

Wow, $525 for a 5c piece. I think I'll stick to the mint sets.

But even $7 for a circulated 1972 5c. That still represents 140x face value. That makes it second only to the $1 mule.

I am not lining up to buy it :) Those sorts of prices are only for those who are deep of pocket or want a few coins of the very best quality.  If I did have the money to spend on that coin or a mangy 1930 penny for $10k I'd take the 5c every time.  Quality will always be quality.

According to Maccas an UNC is $35
The reason that this coin is so highly rated is that up until 2009 over 4 billion 5c have been minted. That makes the 1972 mintage of 8 million comparatively small. Also only a fraction of the 8 million mintage would have survived 40 years.

I guess that is where peoples collecting styles differ. There is no right or wrong but my own preference would be the mangy 1930 penny. I can get a presentable 1972 5c for $30 or so. Whereas the only cheap 1930 penny you can get is from China :whistle2:

True story. And I would have both... but only if I had very deep pockets of course.

However Mark's right, which is why I'm salting away any and all sacks of UNC coins I come across, even without knowing how rare or otherwise they might become. Imagine having a $100 sack (or were they boxes back then?) of those 1972's, and even just one of them being MS68. And before anyone says that's not going to happen again, I have two words... 2012 $1. :dodgy:
