If everyone gave up smoking today the GST would have to be raised at least another 5% just to cover the lost revenue on Fag tax .

Would it though? I bet it would save more in unnecessary health costs, productivity losses and so on than it would lose in tax. In 2005, these costs added up to $31.5 Billion. Compared to about $8 Billion in taxes raised.

I doubt it was 31.5 billion just on smoking related treatment and you forget that these people would also have paid their Medicare levy and in a lot of cases  health fund payments as well on top of the Tax that they have paid on their ciggies :ok:

O/T Currently reading a book by the aussie author Frank Clune (7th edition from 1941) where terms such as n----r are in the book. Got the book (for free from a pile that they were disposing of) from my local library, the book was even signed by the author. Probably thrown out by the PC police.
Now I just need a copy of what was (pre Harry potter) the biggest selling novel in history (Ten Little N----s) without its castrated title (And Then There Were None).

The term N----R is totally inappropriate these days and in fact for the last 2-3 decades at least and is highly insulting to Black people of all countries.
I am the least politically correct person that I know and even I cringe when I hear or see this word used.
It has to be the most inflammatory and racist word known in the English language  :ok:
And NO I am not Black, I am just some Pommy Bastard that came here 48 years ago

Nigger isn't racist unless it is used in a denigrating way. There was that silly controversy over a football stadium in Queensland (Nigger brown), there are thought police who want to edit history books to remove references to the Dambusters raid because Gibson VC had a black Labrador named Nigger. Shall the thought police also erase countries such as Niger?
BTW my kids are mixed race (half African) and one of the names I call my older son is Nigger, usually only call him that on occasion when I want to bait any thought police standing nearby.:to_pick_ones_nose_eat:

I work side by side with Black people from many different countries and the work we do is Hard, Hot, Heavy and sometimes dangerous.
So the Guys work hard and play hard But I have never heard any of them refer to each other as N----rs, Even during the occasional "Misunderstanding" at a pub or wet mess.
You can call your kids whatever you like, That is your prerogative.
But I am pretty certain that if you called one of my Tongan or Samoan Guys a N----r you would probably spend some time  in an ICU :ok:

In Victoria last Year, the racing community was up in arms as a person who owned a horse named BLACK BOY was informed to change the name before it would be able to race again.

The owners changed the name but were very upset.

Now I wonder what people would say now re the book BLACK BEAUTY, are they going to tell the authors to change the name?

From my experience Black people are not offended by the word Black.
Changing a horses name because it contains the word black is just plain stupid :ok:

Maybe the town of BLACKTOWN, one of the outer western suburbs of Sydney should go through a name change.

Funny you should say that Goldie. The local council did look at changing the name of Blacktown earlier this year but it end the council voted against it on the basis of surveys that showed nearly 80% of residents wanted to keep the name.

Depending where you are you will find many black people do call other blacks nigga. It can be used as a term of greeting (wassup nigga) between black mates in America or it can be used to put the trashy blacks down (like the black comedian Chris Rock when he points out the differences between black people and niggas), the mostly black or mixed race audiences laugh freely as they get what he is saying (there are videos on Youtube of Chris Rock if you want to check it out).
Also using PC expressions such as N----r or the N word is actually more offensive to some people than the word itself.
Then you also have wiggas, so how would you abbreviate that? W---a?

People can take offense at anything. Remember that funny scene in Tropic Thunder where the expression you people is used by a whitey and Robert Downey  takes offense and then a blacky takes offense?
(BTW I used the expressions whitey and blacky so you could check your PC meters, if you only took offense at blacky but didn't take offense at whitey then you are very PC infected).

"Hey Whitey, that's my rabbit." Allegedly said by Maurice Tate, as a put down, referring to Don Bradman. The Don did take offence but probably at the sentiment rather than the word 'whitey'.

Probably wouldn't be offensive much now as most people would just be puzzled by the expression.
