This 1872 5 centimes is interesting.
It looks like it has been "gilded" at some stage.
For a coin this old it has held its detail rather well :good:

I just picked this up last night at my local coin club! :yahoo:

Anyone give me an idea on grade and value?  I paid $80 USD for it.  I think it is AU and probably worth twice what I paid at least.

robbiegal

great coins for your collections
Ken-a - where do you get the T rex coin from?
My little granddaughter is nuts about dinosaurs and that coins looks great!

Ok, so I picked this up from ebay recently.  I paid $129 USD for it.  You folks think this is a proof? I sure hope so.  I'm going to send it to PCGS in the near future; i'll keep you updated.

The fields are quite reflective!

What do you think?

Try asking at http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php - there have been a few recent discussions about coins that look like proofs but might not be. In this case, I'm not sure, though there is a lot of weakness to some of the lions' faces.

It is stunning I'd buy it off you for the toning.  I don't need the slab they annoy me.
