Which goes to show if you are a criminal carrying gold you need to be able to prove you have the means of earning it legally. Bring on the accountants.

Considering that he was not charged there is insufficient evidence of a crime. Indeed there may not have been any crime/criminal intent involved. The guy was travelling to Dubai, that quantity of gold is a piddling amount compared to the daily turnover in the gold souqs of the middle east. That he didn't declare it may have been a lapse of judgement, an oversight or part of a security protocol (when I carry anything of value I don't let strangers know what I have). I work in security, I follow the reports of thefts in international travel and there are hundreds of thefts every day in the US by TSA staff. Even if the UK staff are a cut above the yanks would you risk letting them know you have gold bars and possibly have a bar go walkabout as they distract you?

I wouldn't be traveling in the States carrying gold. In fact I wouldn't be traveling in the States, period.

Now that is not a run of the mill job. And an all expenses paid trip to London included.

I was always partial to Martyn Poliakoff's video inside the vault.

For such a "rare" place to get inside, there sure are a lot of videos on YouTube inside the Bank of England's gold vault

I still think they should be bringing it home to Australia.

That's a bloody heavy lunch box - would be about 20 Kg in A$ worth!    (That's about 8 house bricks worth)

Cheers
