I sometimes pick up $5 silver proof coins. I generally think they are stupid (they aren't that limited in numbers and just seem to be pumped out of the cookie cutter) ... but picked up a centenary of rotary coin in memory of my Grandfather's involvement in Rotary.

I'm terrible, as I just shove them in the safe and forget about them.

Anyway, I was shocked when I opened the large delivery box. I was doing a check to make sure every had arrived from the mint, and the $5 box felt so light, I was concerned that the coin was missing.

I opened the coin cardboard box to find this inside:

The holder is made from bamboo and bagasse.
It literally has the properties of compressed paper. A hard cardboard.
I hate it, and with the message attached, I am concerned for the long term lifespan of an organic material.
Yeah, yeah ... wood is organic as well ... but there's something about this I don't trust. There is grassy bamboo, sugarcane begasse, all compressed with glues which will breakdown.

The product feels like a clamshell container you get when you buy Guzman y Gomez.

The website doesn't mention this at all in the info about the coin.

Am I being too precious?? Or am I justified in thinking a $100+ coin (3x melt value) should have a little bit of luxury surrounding it?
There\'s no such thing as too much Borobi!

Suck it in precious. :taunt:
But seriously you do have valid concerns, what sort of breakdown products from the glue and the grass will be emitted to discolour the coin? What if it is as bad as some old soft plastic that will pit your coins. Have they had chemical engineers examine this product for long term stability or did they only think about getting a green tick? The Woke greenies never really think about the long term consequences, just as long as they can "feel good" about what they impose on society.

Yeah, my concern is, if it can happen with this particular coin set ... it may spread to others.
Let's ignore the fact that every other $5 silver proof coin gets a lovely clam shell to store it, and this piece of junk separates into two cardboard halves, and can't function as a display box.

I simply refuse to pay more than double the metal value for a silver coin. Sure, they have to make some money and cover the cost of the die and pressing but if they can't do that at the cost of the metal plus 100% I don't want it and won't buy it. Sure, maybe silver will get to $100 an ounce but probably not in my lifetime.
It is excessive profiteering.
And now rubbish packaging that will bio degrade in the next 5 to 10 years... brilliant. Do they at least put it in an acrylic capsule?
