Hi All

I was asked this today and I really did not have an answer

Is there a list of $1 coin varieties. I am not talking about errors such are cuds (eg rabbit ears) or dies cracks.....I am talking about varieties such as small and large heads etc

I have not heard of such list but I suppose on a forum like this I would assume someone has done some research maybe?

Mister T

1999 head sizes, 2000 mule, 2001 IRB spacing, 2003 Sufragette size, 2014 ANZAC mule and 2015 MOR mule.
I believe that is all.

Mister T

And I believe it's CoF only for 2001 - I haven't seen a Volunteers with I R B.

Pedro

Do the 2001 CoF $1 rotations fit in here (& 1996 as well)?

Pedro

Rotations are errors

So 2001 COF has 2 IRB spacing....narrow and wide
1999 and 2003 suffage has small and large heads

Anything else I am missing here?

Mister T

2003 has different size reverses.
I think that is it.

This is what I managed to dig up. Not saying that this is the extent of it though.

1999 Last Anzacs Cmm,Small and large Obverse, both IRB spaced.
Last Anzacs A-B-S Privy, Large Obverse, all IRB spaced.
Last Anzacs M Privy, Small Obverse IRB spaced.

1999 Older Person, Small, Medium and Large Obverse, all IRB spaced.

2001 Army Cmm, Small Obverse IRB joined.
Army Cmm, Large Obverse IRB spaced.
Army S Privy, Small Obverse IRB joined.
Air Force no mm, Small Obverse, IRB joined.
Air Force no mm, Large Obverse, IRB spaced.
Navy no mm, Small Obverse, IRB joined

2001 Federation, Small Obverse IRB joined.
        Federation, Medium obverse IRB joined.
Federation, Large Obverse IRB spaced (Wider spaced date numerals on reverse)

2003 Women's Suffrage, Shorter and longer left prong on trident

Mister T

What is the medium obverse for 2001?
And by my reckoning the large 1999 obverse is the medium obverse with strike doubling on the lettering.

@emu666 is the decimal coin variety expert. Maybe he can pitch in if he's still here.

I wasn't aware of the obverse legend letter doubling on the 1999 Older Person coin, so when checking the 2001 Federation coin I referred to as medium, I was happily surprised to see the obverse legend doubling you described. The coin was taken from a 2001 Sherwood Mint Set.

As far as the 1999 Older Person coins go, I have identified three different legend to rim spacings as per the Sandpit site but, have been a little suspicious and always thought there may be a fourth, as I'm not 100% certain my large obverse example is exactly that. I remember mentioning this on another thread a few years ago, and maybe put up a pic but not certain.

Interesting. Where was the 2001 medium obverse reported anyway? This is the first I've heard of it.

autocoupler

To my knowledge it hasn't been reported, just something I stumbled upon.

Below are pics from the earlier post in 2017.

Fractionally larger IMO

Medium

Small

Mister T

The IRB is joined on the medium by the looks of it.

Should be very close to compiling a full list in one place.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Shouldn't be too difficult to put a full list together but, then there's the debate about what constitutes a variety, would the first MYO coins from the Mint Visitors Gallery for years 1991 to 1995 be considered varieties.

These were very small runs as identified by Ian McConnelly in a CAB article back in 2007, and are identified by the position of the edge milling in relation to certain letters in the obverse legend. They have been poo pooed previously but, lets not miss an opportunity I say

Anyhow, back to the 1999 obverses. The first pic below is of a Large obverse posted by Hercules, the following three pics are coins I thought of as being Large, Medium and Small. The one I saw as being Large obverse appears smaller than the Hercules Large obverse so, from where I sit there may be four obverse sizes for 1999  .

Would be interested in other opinions.

Hercules' Large obverse

Fractionally smaller than Hercules' Large obverse IMO
