well this brother and sister have raised in excess of $2 million dollars as of tonight
much of it being in 5 cent donations as well - all up i think almost 200,000 $ in 5 cents on the heart mat

it was a local fundraiser today and somehow the royal australian mint was involved
i think the mint was converting the online donations into 5 cent piece donations

it started out as a guiness book of records 5 cent line but ened up being a giant heart of 5 cent pieces

here are some pictures from when i went along today
ALL proceeds go to cancer research !!
one way to russle up a lot of 5 cent pieces for disposal!!

A Great result for a Great cause, If everyone collected up all those 5c coins that most of us never use millions can be raised to do amazing things for so many people.
Great piccies too RG :good:

Goldseeker

A great result but $2M is a lot of 5c pieces.   ($2M x 20 = $40M in my books and that would be a lot of weight).

Where precisely was the heart formed?

canberra netball centre - on the federal highway - near Dickson Mc Donalds
here is a canberra times link about them
they are remarkable

they were weighing the coins
e.g. 5.66 kilos is equal to 2,000 x 5c = $100
in this photo the list of the weights was up on the side of the tent

those Mint drums must also hold a hell of a lot of coins too! appeared to be 40 drums on site
the red drum states 100,000 pieces

Now all we need is for someone to go through them all and pick out all the rare/scarce ones. Imagine just how many 1972s there must be in there, not to mention Low Echidna 1984s and High Echidna 1987s. There might even be a 2007 double-header, which would fetch thousands of dollars on eBay.

robbiegal

yes
i reckon it would be a collectors heaven!!

I would think that you would need a new set of eyeballs after noodling that lot

i was also wondering if those drums were full of 2016 changeover 5 cent pieces!!

goodness knows what they will do with all of those coins
i figured that the Bendigo bank is taking them as they had quite a presence there today

i just checked a media report and yes, Bendigo bank
what a job that will be!!

"It didn't take long for the big heart to sparkle with five cent pieces. However, it will take a little longer for the full amount to be counted by Bendigo Bank.

"The Bendigo Bank are going to take three weeks to count these millions of coins," Samuel admitted. "

...and 3 years to noodle. :laugh2:

I'm also beginning to wonder whether there are any 1985s and 1986s in there that have escaped from mint sets.

robbiegal

everything escapes
noodling proves it every time

I'm just glad they didn't announce the withdrawal of the 5c coin during this year's federal budget. I want them to stick around for the Jody Clark portrait, and maybe even the first portrait of Charles. ;)

Unicorn

I would have happily taken them all and released them back into circulation to save them the 3 weeks ...... can you imagine ..... my eyesight would have been short range only for months!

robbiegal

apparently the big heart had over $300,000 in 5 cent pieces
