Bloody Modern Coin Mart luring me in again (seems apt that I originally mistyped it as "Con Mart").

I collect American Silver Dollars. The Proof silver eagle collection (1986+) has largely been minted at West Point (W), with bullion versions at San Francisco (S) or West Point (W).

Well ... turns out someone has noticed different serial coding on the outside of monster boxes of bullion versions (2015-2017) and submitted a freedom of information request, to determine that in these years, the US Mint has also used the Philadelphia (P) mint to make up some units.

They are now selling these Philadelphia production coins as "Limited Edition", with one of the lowest mintages.
However, in my eyes, it is still just a standard coin. Not Proof, nor BU.

A bunch have been graded and slabbed by NGC, and attract a huge premium (nearly 20 times) over their West Point equivalent.

HOWEVER, there is not mint mark stamping to indicate the Philadelphia mint created it. The only knowledge you have, the label of the slab.

This has potentially opened up a hole in my collection which didn't exist a month ago.

My question is, to those who collect sets, and want all the mintmarks ... would you want a coin, which couldn't be verified later down the track?
Once it is out of the slab, it's just a standard coin (except in your eyes)

Over the years it's not been unusual for U.S. coins, minted in Philadelphia, not to have a mint mark.
The others will have a W or S, so that should be proof enough surely.

It's just that these coins aren't proof or BU. they are only available in a monster box as they are technically a bullion version.
However numismatically, they are different from S and W versions ... but there is nothing to physically identify them as such. No certificate of authenticity or anything.
The three coins are identical from the three mints.

It's this which makes me think to not worry about it. However I'd hate to read about the "rare Philadelphia silver eagle" in years to come, when I can get it now. That said, paying US$580 for a Philadelphia minted one, compared to $37 for a West Point minted coin, which for all intents and purposes are identical in every single way ... makes me think that this is a bit of clever marketing more than anything.
There's no way to prove a P coin. In 20 years time it'll be like how there's more Falcon GTHO's now than they ever produced.

Sorry Uni, this was the best I could do. I did try to find a blue wagon but, no luck.

Very tastefully done Jeff! Is that your young fella's?

NSW number plate and a rego sticker showing means that's more than a few years ago.

No, he is into XEs only. He did buy a blue XD wagon once, immediately cancelled the registration and slipped the rather hot 351 Cleveland into an XE Fairmont S pack with a Supra 5 speed. [Only took him about ten days to turn the gearbox input shaft into a good facsimile of a corkscrew!]

But without the correct identification plate, they will always be just "fakers".

I saw a 351C shoe horned into a TE Cortina. I would of hated to have had to changed the spark plugs on that one. :)

Yeah, but like Coins they are faking the VIN/ID plate as well, esp. Lotus Cortina's and GTHO's,extreme buyer beware. The GT 500 was also heavily replicated.
In the 1970's they were replicating/faking 'Speedwell' badges for Mini Coopers, they still bob up on Ebay, added about a grand to the price and made them easy to sell,Jungle out there.

One of my dearest friends had done a 302c into his Capri some years back, he was quite a smart chap having done all the engineering work himself which is pretty much a handful to clear in NSW.

(I'm sure CDrom won't mind us hijacking the thread with cars! )

Could always switch to Just for the petrol heads

And a Capri V6 was always a good swap into a Cortina.

The Ford South Africa Perana V8 Capri's were a sought after performance car, several made it to Australia.

Thanks for that Basil, I had no idea they existed!

It was interesting to note in the article .......

"in Basil Green's range of performance Fords".

.... what a coincidence!

Yeah Uni,Andrew Miedecke and his son used one in Tarmac Rallies out here but there are at least 2 more in NSW,both road registered(or at least  they were).

My original name on the Stamp Forums was 'Basal State',from my days at School that was the only grade of Coin i had the money to buy.It then became just Basal and now Basil, don't ask me why,it just happened when i joined the  CCF Forum and i continued on here.
