I did think it strange that the Royal Mint sells commemorative coins at face value. Apparently not interested in profiteering by selling at a premium.

Well I should have known better. The 'face value' and 'legal tender' coins that you can't cash in: Has Royal Mint been mis-leading special coin buyers?

First came to my attention on CCF

Begs the question...What does "legal tender" actually mean?
Royal Mint now has these notes on descriptions of commemorative coins;
•This is a commemorative coin.
•Commemorative coins are generally treasured for their aesthetic and collectable value.
•All commemorative and circulating coins made by The Royal Mint are legal tender. However, only circulating coins are designed to be spent.

Why don't they just say "This is what Australians call 'Grannybait'?" :laughingneqw:
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

This problem in the UK all started because some people were "Rorting" the system to gain points on their credit cards.
So basically it has been the actions of the few that have ruined it for the Many. :dash1:

Sure, but whose greed is greater? The greed of the punter trying to scam a few air miles, or the greed of the producer getting five times melt value?

If a coin is produced with a value on it, then it MUST be honoured at that value I reckon, regardless of whether the price goes up, down or sideways. You can't pick and choose whichever makes you more profit.

And by doing exactly that, they have destroyed any credibility they previously had.

I'm happy with the ones I bought early on, but I'm now glad I stopped. And I won't be buying anything else in future I think.
