Made for a souvenir two-up set, of the kind you can buy at tourist shops just about anywhere in the country. Many such sets contain genuine pennies, or gold-plated pennies or whatever. Other sets contain specially-minted flippers such as this.

I recall seeing this particular type for sale somewhere in my travels, but I can't remember exactly where.

When I first sighted the above I immediately thought of a Boar War Commemorative Medalion or something that celebrates Australian troops fighting the Boars.

The upturned hat on the male seemed to me to be a Boar.

Quote...Boars...

I have a South African friend. If she caught you spelling it that way, she'd assume you were deliberately trying to give offence, and slap you silly. :mocking:

Some more trivia: Dulce et decorum est pro patria is Latin, and taken from a poem by the Roman poet, Horace: "It is sweet and fitting to (fight) for one's country".

Well, actually, it's a clipped quote. The entire line in the original poem is Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, "It is sweet and fitting to die for one's country". Perhaps they felt that was a bit too morbid for a tourist souvenir, even if it was in Latin.

My father taught me that the only pennies to use for two up are Bald Edward English pennies (1901-1910) as these were used during WW1 by the soldiers.  They evidently believed that they were the best balanced pennies, but I guess that this is debatable.

I did get some funny looks years ago when I went to a dealer in London and asked for his worst examples, as I was going to polish one side and paint the other black!
