I have some Sydney 2000 Olympic $5 coins listed on eBay and have been asked about "the outer cardboard slip that they slide into".
Just as a matter of curiosity, does anyone know how these coins were originally packaged?
Most of the ones I have are in the plastic, credit card sized sleeves but some are in (very slightly larger) cardboard sleeves. However I don't have any outer packaging.

JeffH,

I have the set in a folder. There are 4 Coins in a plastic sleeve, each Coin is in a cardboard piece with a cut-out for the Coin. There is an info sheet, and the next 4 Coins after the info sheet. ( as you turn the pages ) I think they may have been sold by subscription, and may have been presented in a different way. From the set though, 4 Coins with Card surround in a plastic sleeve.

Chris,
I have a set in an album as you describe.
I understand they were sold on a subscription basis. Initially you would receive the album and the first few coins. Then each month some extra coins, to insert in the album, until the set was completed. The outer packaging for the coins would usually have then been discarded.
I wonder if it is like, say, matchbox toys? Original packaging substantially increase the value of those.

Hello,

I think they were sold in a number of ways. You could buy the set complete, or each Coin 1 at a time. Like a payment system. The Mint may have had each Coin in a Case or something for individual sale also. All about marketing ! They are there to make money ! Pun intended. Sellers of stuff often change things to make it sound " special " to get a higher price. Buyers may then think there was top of the range item and seek it. Any limited edition is only limited by the number they can sell. Numbered is a different thing though.

That's what he meant. A lot of people who put them in the album would have discarded these.

Not sure: the cardboard sleeve is in lieu of the plastic card. It is glued up and holds a PNC type capsule in cutouts and is the same overall layout as the plastic card -looks the same from a distance.
I will grab a photo later but have to go out right now.

OK, here's the two different presentations -cardboard sleeve top. Only the plastic card fits the pockets in the folder.
If you took the holder out of the cardboard sleeve and prised it apart, I think a plastic card would fit in. I wonder if this is a "cobbled up", home made effort?

Australian coin

I would think one is for the folder and one is for individual sale?
I see two different queens heads, old'e and younger were they all like that?

Coin numbered  1, 5, 8, 13, 17, 20, 21, and 25 had the younger portrait all the rest were the older heads :ok:

Odd. Mine are the card and the slip case it fits into. Hence the cutout so you can grab the card. Sure this is original, and not something that was made up afterward?

Just looking at my sets of the above and the following coins, (sports), have the young head of QE11:

Athletics, Hockey, Triathlon, Archery, Gymnastics, Sailing, Football, Weightlifting, Cycling,.

All other sports have the large portrait of QE11 on the obverse.

And, don't forget that the original owners/purchasers of the set also received the Special Subscribers Medallion and a couple of other inserts for the album.

To be honest, I can't remember these coins being available as single coins UNLESS they were sold as a pair with each sports badge.

Um, you forgot number 9, Archery was a younger head edition.
