I would usually eBay something like this at $1 start to see where it goes but the members on this site have been so great to know I thought I would see if anyone here wants this 1st. I don't know much about these bags but I know this is old. not because of any markings but rather because it was in a deceased estate lot I bought and this bag contain several Irish/English coins in mint state condition from the early 30's and it seems to me they have been in this bag since then. With that in mind if anyone wants it with 100 post or more then throw your hand up

my mother in law was born in Scotland , in oban , but she came to aust with her family when she was 18 months old , and she died at age 64  so maybe I could get it for dawn in memory of her mothers heritage,

Sorry kel. It is one of the items which came back from aus post (see other thread for details) I have to repack it to be 20mm thick instead of 26. Sorry about the delay

oh my florin

Nice bag particularly considering textiles generally don't fare very well over time when used as extensively as a purse. Just an idea but you could probably date it more accurately if you found out what metal is on the front. It looks like something along the lines of lead with silver lining? If it does turnout to be lead it would place it most likely in the 1930's as the more expensive metals would have been sold for people to purchase food leaving only room for cheap metals such as lead most likely also the reason why a number of 1930's silver forgeries are in lead to. The top clasp also looks like it may be brass plated nickel or lead so it may be as late as 1945 as brass would have been taken out of commercial uses for use in WWII and the most effective way to do so would be to plate another metal in brass rather than have solid brass.

the circular piece with the stamped/embossed thistle looks like leather to me
the clasp looks like silverplate - EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver), ? just a guess on that one but lead would have been too soft for a purse wouldn't it?
the interior appears unused as a change purse to me, which doesn't fit with the amount of wear on the clasp - perhaps nanna got to the clasp with the brasso some time back!

the Scots are not renowned for dipping into their purse so lead would probably work just fine :laugh2:

But yes EPNS is my bet on the metal on this :ok:

that's ok I took it out of a padded bag and put it in an envelope with card to protect it. it slides in the 20mm slot nicely now. I got me one of those mail checkers from aus post so I can work things out as I pack them so no more returned mail

I'd be lost without my aussie post mail checker cardboard thing-gee-mah-gidge - nice 'vey friendly' aussie post guy gave it to the hubby a few years ago

I had made up a home made one but the genuine article has really lasted

I also use digital scales for weight and cross check when I chuck the parcels/envelopes on the counter scales as well
