I however think this coin will make 50K+

The Australian pre 1955 proof market is depressed and well off of the catalogue values in either Renniks or Maccas.  I'll bet you a dollar that coin gets less than half what you guessed.  Perhaps even less than a third.

It is always a fun activity to have a guess... I think that coin would go for $ 12,750 + commission.

So what do I get for being only $250 off the sold price ? I think I should become a betting man :yahoo:
Collecting coins is not about having the best, but loving what you have ...

you don't have to parachute down to mark's backyard in the nuddie !! ha ha
I reckon that is a win win in the middle of winter!

It's not been as cold as Canberra here in the morning but it's still been pretty freaking cold.  I think any male paracuhting into our backyard in the mornings wouldn't have too much to see.  So that'd be the time to do it.

That is totally unreal, blows my mind that went for $13,000. What would be the factors involved for it going so CHEAP?

A couple of factors.
The auction wasn't in Australia so many collectors wouldn't know it happened.
It isn't the biggest auction house either so unless you follow dozens of auction houses (Heritage, Stacks, Spinks, Baldwins,Seaby etc) then you probably never follow this company either
Many probably thought it would go for 40+ so didn't bother registering as it was out of their pocket, I'd bet a few more would have bid had they thought they had a chance at 13+. Trout, would you have bid if you knew it could be all yours for 13K?
The market is weak at the moment, it is a buyers market with many Australian choice material off by half (or more for banknotes).
The luck of the day, it would only take 2 serious top end collectors to start a bidding duel.

The pre-1955 proof market is very depressed compared with the values you can see in the catalogues.  I don't know whether this is related to the collapse of the Rare Coin Company and the generally spooked nature of the "investment" class coins or not.  But regardless, the price realised mirrored exactly the same prices I've been seeing for this type of coin for several months.

Just like the CV's for top graded PCGS coins you may as well ignore CV's for pre-1955 proofs.  They bear little relation to what's actually going on in the market.

QuoteTrout, would you have bid if you knew it could be all yours for 13K?
It took me a Month to pay off my Pagoda due to overspending on coins and PCGS submissions.
I will never put myself in that position again and 13k would do just that.
So NO it was WAY out of my league but a beautiful coin all the same.
I don't think the coin market is "Depressed" at the moment I just think it is coming back to reality Which is a GOOD thing for collectors.
I do envy the winning bidder on this coin But Bloody good luck to them for getting this stunner :yahoo:
