This one is without serifs. Is that correct?

What do you mean by serifs Steve, sorry for being a retard mate and I don't have a 71 to see sorry. I did find these in a google search http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serif_(disambiguation) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serif Learn something new everyday :)

Sheesh! Talk about asking the tough questions. :biggrin:   There's one on Ebay that says "Serifs on Date Numerals", so here's the link.  I can't see any diff to your coin though.

Can't say I've ever seen this variety mentioned anywhere either, but then I don't 'chase' decimal NZ coins.

The only info I can find is from this site: http://www.rnsnz.com/nci.asp

Earlier rare decimal coins are:

    No date (1967) 2 cent "Bahamas mule": "Bahama Islands" instead of "New Zealand";
    1967 5 cent, "No sea": Lines representing the sea missing to the right of the tuatara;
    1967 5 cent, "No tail": Small triangular area of tail under the tuatara's chin missing;
    1971 10, 20, 50 cent, circulated: Differ slightly from those in sets. Only rare in uncirculated condition.
    1967 50 cent, "dot over 1": A dot over the "1" in "1967".

If you find any piccies that show the differences, please post them. :beg:

Thanks Nancy,
I'm not real sure what they mean by serifs in this case, but I'm thinking now, that it might be the bits that stick out either side at the base of the "1". Which means that mine will have the serif, then.

Here is a pic of my 1976 10c and this doesn't have those bits sticking out. So I guess that is the difference.

It would be nice to have a gallery of these sorts of things, so we know what to look for.

A.J. it looks like there are two different versions of the 1985 10c, but I don't think the font changes.
Seems like they use different fonts in other years though.

I found it interesting just looking at the "1" and how different they can be

So many Mints have been involved with minting NZ decimal coins so that possibly explains all the different fonts.

Take your pick from these Mints:

[c] Royal Australian Mint, Canberra
(l) Royal Mint, Llantrisant
(o) Royal Canadian Mint, Ottawa or Winnipeg
(m) B.H. Mayer, Germany
(n) Norwegian Mint, Kongsberg
(p) South African Mint, Pretoria
(v) Valcambi SA, Switzerland
(w) Perth Mint, Western Australia

Mints for Decimals are indicated in Krause, but not for pre-decimals.
 :dontknow: Maybe they were all done in the UK. :scratch_one-s_head:
