Tonight at the MNS meeting, we had a couple of interesting alleged clips, bought as a pair for $40 at a market.

There was some debate over the 2¢ (1979, IIRC), which some argued was a proof (I'd call it an aUNC). Not a clip, but rather a cold shut that departed probably after striking, as there was no evidence of a Blakesley effect. The texture on the cut section left absolutely no doubt that it was genuine, so in my opinion the value is there.

The other one was a 1966 5¢ in pretty well circulated condition. It has what could be called two clips, separated by maybe 40°.

But...

The edge appeared more or less intact, and there was no real evidence of the Blakesley effect. The rim on the obverse didn't match the reverse either. So in my opinion, not a clip.

But also not apparently a shed job. There was no evidence of abrasion or being squeezed in a vice. Which leads me to this question...

What can cause gaps in the rim, but not be clips? As I recall the rimming process, its applied to the blank with a roller, isn't it? So its not like a fill or strikethrough could cause that.

Or am I wrong about them being clips? Is it possible to have two tiny clips which would interfere with the rimming process, but not noticeably affect the reeded edge of the coin? Does anyone have any coins remotely like what I'm describing?

I did offer to take the coin and image it with the USB scope, but the offer was politely declined. The owner is a forum member, but far too busy with a new business to ever log in. So I suggested he buy a scope, or at least try and get some high-res photos of it to post.

Yeah, me too, but all I had with me was the iPod and bad room lighting. Didn't even have a decent magnifier. :(
