Does anyone who goes through lots of 50c pieces keep track of the ration of incused to regular 2000 50c pieces? McDonalds gives a rough estimate of 1% to 2% (based on the mint's estimated mintage) and my own figures roughly agree with that but I don't see near enough of the coins to get an accurate value and I've only started counting reasonably recently.

Fulvio

That would be reasonable.

You can't really judge from current finds though, as every one found is withdrawn from circulation, thus reducing the ratio.

I am pretty certain that only the one die was used to produce this variety and the general consensus is that there are about 20,000 of these minted.
Emu put a lot of work into trying to determine the Mintage of the 2000 incused 50 cents and the 20,000 figure is generally accepted as the Mintage.
We will NEVER know with any absolute certainty but that figure is the "Best Guess" worked out by quite a few prominent numismatists :ok:

I doubt that the figure can be worked out by noodling large numbers by any one individual. Even a few individuals wouldn't be able to do it unless they took particular care to obtain coins in bulk from every region. Reason being the release point (or points) would be the mother lode and it takes many decades for the coins to disperse. For pre decimals collectors back in the 1960s still found large variation in the distribution of coins such as the 1914 halfpenny (50 years after release it was still much more common to find in circulation in SA if I recall correctly).
So you might find well less than 1% in one city and well over 2% in another.

Generally accepted value is one die pair or 100,000-200,000 coins.

Some years ago I used to find these regularly -about every third or fourth month. Now it is more like an annual excitement.
Assuming Mark's figure is reasonable (it's as good as any) then in the order of 1% would have been about right back in the day.
Subtract all the found ones (and people are very actively looking for them) then less than ½% is more like it now.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Most of the undiscovered incused coins have been rattling around in peoples pockets for the last 17 years, Finding a good one now is a Huge ask.

I am not going to argue the mintage at all but I have 19 spares in my collection and one reasonable one in my used collection.

And I am still noodling at this stage.

The going rate for these 3-4 years ago was about $20 a pop for EF-AU coins, at that time I picked up about 20 of them all up.
I have given a few away but I still have a dozen or so left:)
