Ill be buying a HP inkjet 8600 plus multi function today. For the XL refills that's $160 for Black plus 3 individual colors. Will be interesting to see how long that will last us. Color is pretty important for others who will be using the printer.

Been there, done that, since the old LaserWriters which used Canon engines. Refilling is not exactly straightforward, as there are different toners, which not only give different results, but can actually cause damage. That said, there aren't many different types, and the process for any given cartridge is not exactly rocket science. But it does come down to a cost/benefit analysis. In the end, I decided it wasn't worth the time and effort once my needs had changed and my print volumes went down drastically. Now I just buy aftermarket cartridges or professionally refilled ones, and average one a year.

So I finally purchased a HP Officejet 8600 Plus. Got it down to $223.25 after price match and 5% from officeowrks. (Advertised for $319)

Turns out I can buy a external ink tank for it too. Something I'll look into.

I have an old Canon Pixma MP810. A great piece of equipment. I have  been told by Techs this is the best model they made a few times. I do film and sound work on the side and this machine has negative holders and prints direct from old black and white and colour film negatives and slides, it also has a carriage that prints CD and DVD printable discs. I do historical book reproduction too, That is very heavy on inks. As even a black and white page reproduced is toned with age. So every page is basically a full colour print.  Ink is a big expense but the machine does so much it is hard to replace with something that may operate cheaper.
