Any ideas what the damage around the emu might be?

Goldseeker

Could possibly be a flaking planchet in that area.

The picture is a little small.   Maybe a scan of the full face of the coin as well might help.

ooo that's a good one Pedro, I'd lean toward pmd only 'cause of that cud looking thing on the top right of that mark, very hard telling from pic's sorry. I have a 20 cent that has a funny mark on the T in australia but it's hard to get a good pic that shows all the angles as you see different things as you move the coin around..funny how the T in the hole

A wise person knows there is something to learn from everyone.

Impact crater. If you clean the crud out of it you'll find it has a smooth bottom, and you can clearly see the displaced metal around it.

AJ's on the other hand is a strikethrough. The pit has a rough bottom from the crud, and no displaced metal around it. You often find these with the crud still in place, usually a grey/blue material which is likely a congealed lubricant.

Cold shuts may look similar to strikethroughs, but are generally larger and have sharper edges. The inclusion is also usually still present, attached at one end, or if broken off leaves a sharp tear line.

Think I might need a miner's light and pick to get to the bottom of the hole!

Slightly different view of the divot. There seems to be a gouge across the emu's neck which suggested to me that it was PMD, but it is a weirdly shaped indentation.
