I am trying to put scans of my error/variety coins into the Gallery and the Gallery keeps saying my picture is to big.

For instance, first picture posted is 804kb, then I go to post the second picture of the same size, and I get the message, Picture is to big.   I then reduce the size of the picture by 5% and it gets posted.

Then I go to post a third picture at 790 kb after reducing it by 5% and I still get the same message, Picture is to big.   I then reduce the reduced picture again by 5% and it gets posted.

I have many pictures to post but if I have to reduce each picture by 5% to post, it won't be long before my posting of pictures will be of blanks.

Please help.

The reason I am doing it is that:

1.   Give people some idea what is out there; and
2.   To have all my postings of the same size.

The Gallery is restricted by absolute dimensions of the image AND the image size.  The maximum dimension for either height or width of the image is 1280px and the maximum image size is 1024KB.  I cannot imagine any circumstance where you'd need a bigger image of a coin than that.

Get some sort of batch image processing tool (like Faststone or Irfanview) and resize your images BEFORE you try uploading them.

Ran foul of size limitation with banknotes.
Image size 1200X1035 Saved at 75% Quality Jpeg
File Size 465kb

For single coins 700X700
For Doubles 1200X600
Both saved at the 75% Mark

Photoscape used to resize, Quality setting 85 (Equals 75%)
Display will be fine.

OK, problem solved, thanks.

Now, after posting the pictures and I go to the front page of the gallery, none of my coins are visible with the other coins.

Does one have to select my Album or do they just appear on the front page?

On the front page of Gallery there is a Random selection displayed.
Under that is a display of the most recent updates uploaded.

To view your "Album" yuou select it.

Interesting.   So the pictures I post in "my album" are automatically viewable on the opening page of the gallery?

I have done my first link to the gallery and I can't believe the size of the scan that appears in the topic.   I trust that this size is OK to the moderators?

75% JPEG quality is more than enough, and will cut file size by a factor of six. You should have this in your default settings, as you'd rarely need to go higher, and lower is crap.

As for dimensions, 800 pixels wide is a reasonable maximum. 640 for mundane stuff like pics of crowded desks. That will cut the file size further, so from a couple megs down to 400k-ish, to 200k or less is quite achievable.

Also worth noting that the content does determine the file size. JPEG is a "lossy" compression algorithm. Which means detail is thrown away and later reconstituted. Therefore fine detail does not get compressed the way broad expanses of colour are. After all, who cares if a picture of sky or a wall isn't pixel-perfect? But you most certainly will care if you're trying to read a scan of a page of text... or look for fine detail on a coin.

I wish to thank all those that have contributed to my problem in posting pickies in the Gallery etc.   Me thinks I have worked most of it out now.
