I'll throw these Pics. up for future reference now the Forum looks like being saved.

1934 'wide ornament' 3d overdate,very rare,i've seen about 3 in 50 years of collecting.

99% of overdates are the 'close ornament' types.

This is the normal overdate for 1934 3d,'ornament' close to 4.

Basilstate, what concerns me here is that the underlying second 3 from the 1933 dated die would be in a different position for the normal overdate and the new one you are showing. I'd love to see a really high magnification pic of your "tilted 4 overdate".

Ok,leave it with me and i'll try and get some better microscope Pics.,probably on W/end.

These Coins were discussed in the 1960's when a couple of researchers stated(in writing) that the wide ornament O/D didn't exist. Long time ago but IIRC the wide ornament was a different Die,the date was in the same position but the ornament was wider and only a handful of overdates existed at that time.

Interesting! As stated in an earlier post, the 4 appears to be tilted to the left. Now that there are two photos one below the other making for easier comparison, my eyes see a slight left tilting of the 3 as well?
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

Basilstate

Yes Auto,slight tilt there,i haven't heard/seen them called 'tilted 4 overdate' however,live and learn.

Hi all.
Lets not forget later research on that error/variety!

I had a shot at discussing and explaining the hub errors and published my findings in the Coin and Banknote magazine.
My findings were based on a limited number of examples.
See CAB December 2017, vol 20-11, page 94 and 95.

Of course Dr David Briggs then provided a more in-depth review of the coin type in his Pre-decimal Silver Handbook.
My CD copy has two pages, 207 to 209 where David discusses the Three types of reverse to be found, 'narrow date', 'wide date' and "overdate".
The reasons behind the appearances are discussed, based on many more samples.
David found the "overdate" (or re-hubbing) was about 5% of the total and identified 5 dies on which this mess was made.

The magazines and book were freely available and should be in all collectors libraries.

I can scan or find the info from the book pages and PDF those for anybody interested.
Just send me an email and ill reverse back.

Cheers, Fred.
