This sorry affair is but a symptom of the obnoxious attitude the Australian cricket team has developed in recent years.

Yep,my Niece is a Journo.and her BF is a Sports Journo,at a social event last year a  Pommy Journo. called them a "grubby team" ,and it stuck,the Aussies,including several retired players on the Radio Show BSB. started using that and similar terms,mainly aimed at Warner & Lehmann with Smith the bunny in the headlights.
Well,its come home to roost now.
I can't believe Warner getting upset when he received a bit of his vitriol back after what he's been dishing out the last couple of years,Umpires need to be stronger with sledging.

Quote from: 'JeffH' pid='114704' dateline='1522448710'This sorry affair is but a symptom of the obnoxious attitude the Australian cricket team has developed in recent years. I have long since stopped watching the cricket for mainly this reason (and also the number of inconsequential matches).
Again, today, many letters to the editor about it. This one was a highlight for me;

'Quite coincidentally last week I was going through the possessions of my late sister. Among them were some letters to our mother. The relevance of this is that my brother was Ian Craig, who at the age of 22 captained the Australian cricket team to South Africa in 1957. Its ranks included Neil Harvey, Richie Benaud, Bobby Simpson and Alan Davidson. I believe the keepsakes of my mother shine a very contrasting light on the captaincy of the 1957 and 2018 Australian teams.

In February 1958 my mother received a letter from a lady in Johannesburg. It said, in part: ''We hope Ian will forgive us when he knows we've written to you like this ... but we so wanted you to know how much we thought of Ian and what a thoughtful, charming and popular person he has been over here not only as Captain of the Australia team but as an ambassador for his country.

''While in Johannesburg, Ian has been to our house with a few of our friends. I felt you would have been a very proud mother had you heard what they said of him. Let alone the starry eyes and hero-worship of our two little boys with whom he was all that a ''Famous Cricket Captain'' should be and they now play harder than ever at school. All a very wonderful influence on children. Indirectly, Ian and the team and tours like this must help to bring to the world of youth some example and influence of good and healthy sport apart from the fine spirit that tours like this do for international friendship and understanding.

''This Australian side has been one of the most popular ever and everyone knows how much of that is due to the respect for the Captain and his example, both on and off the field.''

We would like you all over there to know in what high regard he has been held throughout South Africa and he will be leaving behind a host of sincere friends who will look forward to his return to South Africa in any capacity''. '

P.S. Cricket Australia could do worse than asking Adam Gilchrist to spend some time with the team as an "attitude coach".

Thanks Jeff, thats how cricket to be played. There is a reason why it is called "Gentleman's Game". Unfortunately many young (at times old) club cricket players follow their lessthan ideal,  cricket heros. Sledging is very common and racial vilification not uncommon. If you remember a few years ago Warner asked one of the inidan players to speak English ? The very same weekend one of the grade crickets playing against my team said the same thing to two of my team mates. We gave the culprit an ear and a half full. But he thought thats how he should behave. The guy was in later 40's.

Lehmann has form,most of the Oz. Cricket Journo's(and Umpires) didn't report his on field behaivour or drunken outbursts after games for fear of being cut out of the Test Teams inside Info.
In the glory days of Australian Cricket there would be no way in the World he would get near managing or coaching an Australian Team after his playing days antics.

Whatever happened to the The Players' Spirit of Australian Cricket? It seems to have fallen by the wayside in recent years.
That document was composed by the Australian Cricket team in 2003 in response to several ugly incidents and in acknowledgement of the "ugly Australian" reputation the team had earned. [That sounds familiar.]
