Keep in mind the bags have holes in them. Its not the plastic, its the air that affects them. I had the same sort of tarnishing happen to some coins I left sitting on a shelf in a cupboard.

For those here with an impulse heat sealer, you may find that a setting of 5.5 or thereabouts will seal your 2 x 2's without the need to buy the more expensive self-sealing 2 X 2's.

So far it is working for me.

The impulse heat sealing basically removes any continual contact with air.

Worthy of further investigation by the more knowledgable here.

I use an iron, which everybody has. Just stay away from the window, obviously.

I bought a few of those once, and found they were too small for albums. Besides, if you're really on a budget, hit the bank for a box of bags (free), and Bunnings for some Acetone (I just bought 4l for $38 today). Then seal them like I posted elsewhere.

Obviously more work, but definitely cheaper, eh? :)

Is it generally accepted that the empty coin bags issued by banks are OK to store coins in long term - (sealing the small holes)?

They're LDPE, so no different to any other LDPE bags/films.

Note that LDPE is somewhat porous to certain gasses, as I found out the hard way. But then all plastics are, to some degree.

As far as films go, you probably can't go past metallised BoPET (Mylar), as used in ordinary chip packets and the like. Obviously not clear, but as an outer layer for LDPE or PP bags/pouches, it will keep nasties away. Especially if vacuum-sealed.

The alternative is rigid and expensive capsules/slabs. Fine for special coins, massive overkill for run-of-the-mill stuff you have thousands of.

Tell him to buy some multi-pocket pages when he gets his next batch. Ultra-Pro make a huge range of styles, up to about 30 pocket IIRC, all out of the same PP material.

I use a lot of the 9-pocket ones, which will take two 3x3's in an LDPE coin bag each with some gentle persuasion. They're the most popular by far, and significantly cheaper than say 20-pocket for example.
