Can you have it XRF tested where the plating is coming away just to be sure? The bullion dealers would have a XRF scanner.

If it is plated then in my book that =Dodgy, I also forgot to mention that this also fails the "ring test  :ok:

the hubby uses the ring test on his 8 reales

just a thought - do people plate old coins to make them look newer by any chance?

I haven't heard of that being done, but having them Gold plated isn't an uncommon thing.

Yes all is good :)
I bought 2 of these from the same seller and the other one looked just fine and about a AU55/58 coin.
I sent it to PCGS and it is in the same submission as your penny's, I will find out in a few weeks how that one goes :ok:

All is good Eric, It would involve a trip to Perth 1000k there and back to have this tested.
I did a "Ring Test" against another crown and the sound was totally different :ok:

found my 1937
weighs in at 28.3 grms
I bought this off an interstate dealer in what he called a consignment lot'
maybe it isn't a fake?

RG I would bet you a real 1937 crown that your crown is real and the reverse has been left sitting in acid.

robbiegal

cool
I like that opinion
thanks Mark

I also did wonder if it was a lower pressure strike particularly on the reverse

I have a couple of other questionable coins ..... should start a thread!!

Personally I think the orange peel effect and the halo around the legends is a dead giveaway of an acid treated coin.  I am not sure how reactive silver is with acid but your coin certainly looks like other acid treated coins I've seen.
