Lighthouse Quadrums or Saflips?

I've been trying to assess the options for storing some 50 cent pieces and other large coins and and have narrowed it down to two options...

1. Lighthouse Quadrums to be stored in a case or Grande album.

2. Saflips also stored in an album.

It's not just a financial decision, I want the coins to be secure but accessible.

I have decided against the traditional card 2x2s.

Do any of you use either of these options and if so I'd be interested to hear your advice.

If anyone has another storage option they swear by feel free to share it!

I'd like to know if the foam inserts in the quadrums will break down in time and do damage to the coin but only time will tell!

I like to use saflips in conjunction with 20 slot pages and housed binders, all acid free and convenient. The only slight draw back may be if you wish to photograph the coins later on it could mean having to remove them, unless you're like me and happy to make do with a poorer result, probably a skill thing really  although the same might be said for other storage systems when wanting to do pics. Anyhow, IMHO a small price to pay for a secure air tight seal.

Aj the Foam inserts are inert and in the Intercept ones they absorb atmospheric containments. I would rather 2x2s as I hear that the coins can move in Quadrums and move against the plastic itself.

ausjack

Yes true they can move so that's why I went back to the old tried and true 2x2 :good: Inert they may be but lets see what people say in another 10/20 years as they could be all powdery and turning to dust or all sticky, who know as they haven't been around long really.

The Intercept are guaranteed to still be effective at absorbing atmosphere contaminants for at least 15 years, isn't the plastic acrylic or something?

ausjack

Don't know sorry and 15 years isn't long when talking about coin storage as I had heaps in those plastic sheets and about 10 years later I could really see the difference as it sent some purple and the coins started to stick to them so I near :cray: all those coins stuffed but we live and learn..for a price :(

Autocoupler you said you use the saflips. Do you heat seal them? If not, are the coins easy to get in and out? And my other question is do the coins in their saflips fall/slide out of the 20 slot pages when you don't want them to?

ausjack

20 slot page yes but the 6 slot with flap that PP do don't, well that's what I've found.
Here's a link and I find them quite easy to store and would have about 10 of them now and 2 of the big folders.

I agree PP's albums are great but I just can't get past the binders from Lighthouse/Renniks :P

Yes that is my main concern with the 20 slot pages, that they will slide out. The security that the 6 slot pages offer is absolutely brilliant but I need bigger albums and more slots.

ausjack

yes that's the down fall with the small albums is that you can't store enough coins. Hopefully one day we'll be able to get the big folders so they don't fall out.

Yes I always heat seal them, a small price to pay if you have to remove a coin at some point. Don't have a problem with the 20 pocket pages, just store them upright, and be mindful of which way is up when carrying.

I drape a calico bank bag across the top of the pages, which keeps everything where its supposed to be. Keeps dust out too.
