So a friend of mine on facebook has just posted an error he had found in the new 2015 $2 Anzac coins....

Another friend also found the same error on the green remembrance $2..

Anyone else come across this error on the coloured coins?

Australian coin

I know how they are manufactured, this is called mint sport

Mister T

I don't see the sport in it, I mean really? They enjoy sending a coin out there into circulation like this not knowing whats going to happen to it. Pointless really lol

Please elaborate on the process and why it must be mint sport?

oh my florin

Well it would be worth a bit regardless particularly in a PCGS holder

the machine only works one way usually, im pretty sure if its the wrong way it usually wont fit in the holder or print or set off the screen monitor.  its all done by computer now,

and the Perth mint one is actually filled by hand, and this is how mint sport is done ( a human puts it in upside down on purpose) anyway the coin would go home with the naughty employee, it would not be found in 'so called' circulation

All I know is that he pulled it out of a mint bag.. I would of thought it would have been too easy for the paint to go onto the obverse if the coin had somehow flipped sides but I don't know too much about the minting side of things still so I'm probably wrong.

I don't see how it wouldn't fit - a $2 coin is more or less the same whichever way it is facing. Maybe they do have something in place to detect if a coin is the wrong way around but I would have thought that the paint gets applied pretty soon after it is struck, when the coin is assumed to still the same way up after getting struck.

If you have ever seen one of these types of coins with the paint removed you would notice that there is an "Etching" process applied to the coin prior to being pad printed.

There is NO evidence of this on the obverse of the coin pictured in this thread but the reverse does show the etching.
I tend to agree with AC that this is "Mint Sport" and probably created by some shonky individual at RAM for monitory gain.
The pad printing process at RAM is rather sophisticated and I am of the opinion that errors like this are unable to exist without intervention by a Mint employee.
There are absolutely NO examples of the pad printing on the obverse of ANY of the pad printed Dollar coins.
YES they are worth a premium but is that premium worth risking a cushy job at the Mint over?

Thanks AC.
I will check the video later.
Without knowing the process, it does seem like something that could happen through malfunction or genuine error.

I was thinking about this and was wondering - are the pad-printed coins hand packed? If they are then that would explain why you've never seen one printed the wrong way around.

When I did a mint tour they were doing them individually in the proof room

Seen a 2014 $2 Green one as well. That one was pulled from circ. Not heard of anyone with a 2013 $2 purple, though.

Same reason why the no mm coins exist from mobile press.
