Did anyone see the daytime meteor that was visible in the skies over Melbourne and I would presume other places about the place.

I missed it as I sick and flat out on my sofa.

This thread reminds me of an experience in 1966 - 67. It was around January school holidays, so probably working up to my last school year which was 1967.

Hot summers night in Werris Creek N.S.W. Mum, Dad and myself were talking with the neighbors over the paling fence when out of the west came a roaring sound like nothing I had experienced before or since.

The night sky lit up as a ragged formation of fireballs appeared to be homing in on the town, more to the point, on a line nearly directly over our house. There were literally dozens if not hundreds of individual pieces tailing off in an elongated V formation, the noise they emitted was something akin to a war time air raid siren, and as they came closer an ever increasing crackling and spitting sound was overwhelmingly evident.

By the time they were over our house, just a guess but maybe 1000 feet maximum, the noise was quite alarming with the sparks and crackling being more like explosions, something I will never forget.

They disappeared at great speed into the east, and more than likely came down somewhere between the town and the Great Dividing Range. The weird thing is, apart from my Dad casually uttering something about a falling star, I don't remember the incident being spoken about at all around the town or in the news.

A sobering thought, if the trajectory had been a fraction of a degree more acute, the town could have been decimated.

That's it for my X files contribution, but very true.
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

I understand that quite regularly there are meteorite showers over Australia.

There was a huge meteorite that came down not far from Melbourne many years ago.

I can remember when I was posted to Townsville with the Army when a meteorite came down near Charters Towers.

Over the radio it was announced so almost every detector operator in the district went out to find bits an pieces of it.

Next day a spokesperson from the James Cook university complained that the general public went and destroyed the landing area before the scientists etc could oversee the area.

What else did they expect.   Even the police couldn't stop the flood of people looking for the meteorite and its bits and pieces.
