But... but... putting the denomination on the reverse would totally ruin the artwork! They wouldn't have been able to show anywhere near as much of that extraordinarily relevant barometric scale if they'd been forced to waste space to make it look like a coin!

{In case you couldn't tell from the strategic use of italics, yes, that was me trying to be sarcastic.}

In case anyone is interested, Wikipedia has a copy of the cat-in-the-gun picture the coin design is based on. But I'm still all ??? about what a barometric scale has to do with this cat, or this ship.

Good point Sap, now this is all just speculation from a madman and who knows what the RAM is thinking at any time but I suppose they were trying to associate it with the navy some how and they would have had a few choices of instruments that they could of used, a sextant, compass, barometer, mariner's astrolabe, binnacle or other parts of the helm being some of the main ones and maybe went with the barometer as a sextant would have ruined their design as the arms would have been straight through the middle of the pussy and I think they might have used a sextant and compasses on a few other coins already so the next choice would probably be a barometer being round but they should have put the weather reading on it where they say fine, stormy, etc. That's about the only thing my pea brain can come up with sorry and probably well off the mark :angel:

There is nothing really special about this particular cat, most Ships used to have a "Ships Cat".
This is from "Wikipedia"

The ship's cat has been a common feature on many trading, exploration, and naval ships, and dates back to ancient times. Cats have been carried on ships for many reasons, the most important being to catch mice and rats. These rodents aboard a ship can cause damage to ropes, woodwork and after the introduction of steam, electrical wiring. Also, rodents threatened the stores the ship carried. Rodents may devour the foodstuff carried to feed the crew, and could cause economic damage if the ship was carrying grain or similar substances as part of its cargo. Rats and mice were also sources of disease, which is dangerous for ships that are at sea for long periods of time. For example, rats are carriers of plague and it is believed rats on ships were one of the main spreaders of the Black Death.

Cats naturally attack and kill these rodents.[1] The natural ability of cats to adapt to new surroundings made them suitable for service on a ship. They also offered companionship and a sense of home, security and camaraderie to sailors who could be away from home for long periods, especially in times of war.

This coin is just another in a long line of coins the RAM is producing using the Anzac theme.
It is only a matter of time before we see coins commemorating all the different battles
/Campaigns  the generals and all the individual VC winners on the 25mm coin.
It is a Great thing that we remember what our forefathers did to protect and build Australia, It is  Sad thing when that history is Exploited for monetary gain as RAM is doing at the moment :dash1:

They should make a coin for this cat. I'd buy it.

The denomination for the Horse and Cat coins is on the Obverse, directly below the effigy of QE11.   It reads ONE DOLLAR.
