I bought a German hyperinflation note that was supposed to be 500 million. On closer inspection afterwards it looks like 500? Did I picked up the wrong one...

I put it into Google translator - definitely 500........................

I was gonna pick up the 1 billion listed in their catalog - but someone bought it already. So I settled for the biggest one they have which was 500 million. I must have misread the bloody label.

It is a notgeld note. 500 mark issued during the hyper inflation period in Germany. You therefore will not find it in any pick catalogue. These type of notes were issued by many government and non government authorities to cover for the lack of banknotes issued by the federal government during hyper inflation. Issue at Hoerde near Dortmund by the Pheonix steel works. It is not a mining share note as stated above but a real life private issue banknote.

The steelworks were rebuilt after the Allied bombs of WWII levelled the place and lasted until the turn of the millennium, when the site was sold off for residential redevelopment. Today, the site of the Phoenix steelworks is now the Phoenix-See (Lake Phoenix), a picturesque lake surrounded by upper-middle-class apartments. All part of the efforts of the city to rehabilitate itself from "industrial wasteland" to "the green heart of the Ruhr region".

Alas, your note is indeed for a "mere" 500 marks. I own a Phoenix note from Hoerde, a 5000 mark note that was later revaluated by overprinting to a 1,000,000 mark note; there's a picture of it in my CCF gallery. Mine has been holepunch-cancelled.
