I thought I would try out the restoration services offered by PCGS.
It was bit of a gamble considering the coins would be in their own submission, and it took over 3 months in which time the $AUD moved a fair bit in the wrong direction.

Before :

After :

The coin actually received a grade (not details) and in the hand they have done a wonderful job with the verdigris.

I also had another coin with spotting that looked to maybe only have been light on the surface. I couldn't say if they attempted anything on it. This coin was already in a holder and thus covered by their guarantee and it was regraded as the same grade.

My overall thoughts are I would recommend it only for rarer coins where condition is being impacted. I couldn't say if I would recommend the service for more common coins, mostly because of the cost.

For a pre decimal coin like your '42 what was the all in cost to you?

Was just over $135 per coin with 2 coins in the submission.

Ouch! Bet a big chunk of that was the postage. $66.45 (USD so about $80 of the little Aussie bleeder) for 1-10 coins; for that price I hope the coins flew first class and were served champagne.

That pink/red spot often remains when a chemical has been used to treat verdigris. It's most often a sign to avoid such a coin. I have seen it then covered up with brown boot polish (by unscrupulous dealers). PCGS have done a good job with the coin, I guess you have to weigh up value and the verdigris getting worse. Thank you for sharing your experience, we have not used the restoration service.

they did do a pretty good job Rob but what was the coin worth before and what is the coin worth now, is it really worth all the trouble??

Slabbing is so very hard to work out what's worth it and what's not and I can see both sides of the argument but starting to think raw is the go and especially when you factor in ALL the cost.

For me the cost / value is irrelevant.
I've found now that I'm at the tail end of completing my KGVI set of 1/2d's that some years are extremely tough, and even tougher to find with colour in them. The perth coins are extremely difficult. I would gladly pay catalogue / bluesheet value for the coins I'm missing in my set.

In any case, this coin filled the slot for the type , so I'm happy it's in a holder.
