Jeff's thread on Penny varieties jogged my memory on this coin.Purchased this one in the early days of Ebay in Oz.,a daughter was selling her Fathers extensive coin collection and the 2x2 was marked as "Renniks, dot over top scroll 1918 Penny, rare",never heard of or seen one so i bid on a whim. It has a possible dot over the top scroll but a clearer one after Aústralia.
 Anyone know of this 'variety'.??

Sorry, it is not on my list yet. Nothing in Renniks that I can see.
I am not aware of any varieties that year. I am thinking it is a normal 1918 I.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

I think Basil was referring to the Renniks Varieties list. There's about 18 in it for the 1918, including the dot above top scroll and a couple relating to the dot after Australia.

Robster

Have just had a look through my 1918's. No dots above scrolls but one with a very defined dot after 'A' in Australia.    One with an impression of 'N' on second 'N' in PENNY and the third with a spur high up on the first leg of the second 'N'.
I will post some pics tonight or tomorrow.!

Yep,this is from the Ian McConnelly 2005 book but i found a listing elsewhere in the early 2000's but lets face it ,as Jeff said, its probaly a normal 1918 with pimples but if anyone knows anything about these i would be interested to learn.

1918 Penny.

Faint dot over scroll.

Dot after 'A' in Australia.

Both of these are on the same coin Basil, possibly confirming your coin.!

I find it incredibly difficult to define which is  a "Dot" or a "Lump" on Australian Coppers and I gave up trying a few years ago.
I envy you guys that can spot them a mile off and have an encyclopaedic memory of the other relevant die marks associated with these "Dots".
My eyes cannot handle the strain of looking for these But I do indeed enjoy reading about them.

I was the same for 50 years Jim,only dot i looked for was the top one on a 1919 or 20 Penny. Now that i'm semi retired and have more patience, and USB Microscopes, i am a bit more keen to look at obscure coin faults/varieties.

I have albums and Ice cream tubs full of penny's.
Maybe one day I will get around to looking for the different varieties

Your example is directly above the scroll where mine seems to be a few microns to the left.? Perhaps it was caused by a bit of swarf that sat on the die and shifted between strikes.
Mine is very obvious when viewed through a 50x glass on a slight angle.!
I look forward to any other examples owned by members.!

The following are two other errors in my 1918 folder.

Spur and Dot adj. to second 'N' in Penny.

Die Clash adj. second 'N' of Penny.    Lucky man Trout, hundreds of hours of fun in the future.

:laugh2: I spent about an hour last night looking for my 1918's ..... no luck ..... will have another 'search' tonight.

btw: I love the crosshairs Robster!

Question: Why does 'an hour' sound correct when hour doesn't start with a vowel?

Is it my slang way of saying it ....... owa ?

Robster

Always in the crosshairs Uni.!  (Mrs. Robster is out).  :shok:
