Name/Title
Annie Maria MORTON/FAUNT/HARLOW (Granny Harlow), b. 22nd January 1853, Oven's Diggings VIC, d. 7th January 1940, Blackall QLD

About this object
Annie and Thomas were farming at Cootamundra at a property called 'Cungegong' when their second only living son, Edward was born. Shortly after his birth they left the Cootamundra district to work their way to western Queensland, which was at the time attracting land hungry people from the south.
Whilst working on 'Bygoloree Station' in the Forbes district of NSW, Thomas died. He was buried at 'Bygoloree Station' in a lonely, unmarked grave. Annie was to continue the long journey with her children.
In 1879, she remarried at Camp Hill, Forbes, a teamster named John Harlow. They eventually settled in Blackall. Annie delivered her own twins with the help of her husband who cleared a spot on top of a load of wool and put up a mattress for her.
In later years, she acted as a midwife and has bought the family of the late Jackie Howe into the world. She also delivered many Blackall babies who would now be the older residents of Blackall in the 60 - 70 age groups.
In the big wet season when no-one could get to Evora Station and the manager's wife was on the way to have her first child, Mrs Harlow, mounted a horse and with water up to the girth of the saddle, rode side saddle to Evora Station and delivered the baby safely.
Granny Harlow, as she was known by most, had no hospital training but, she used the gifts she was given to help others in need. She was indeed a grand old pioneer.

Nice story Kel, well done.

If one wants to trace one's family tree as I have done several years ago, one will notice that up to 1954 or there abouts, families were quite large with anything up to 20 children.

After 1954, the large family trend slackened off and 2-4 kids was the norm.

'Why I wondered.

The answer in one word and that word was TELEVISION!
