Off Centre?

I'm seeing a number of off-centre strikes, and got to wondering just how off-centre off-centre really is?

I mean, you see massive flaws (I don't consider one-off's to be errors as such) where half the coin is missing (like that 50¢ on ebay we were debating), but what about one that's off by a few millimetres? or even half the rim width?

They're still off, right? So does size really matter? Or is this a case where it has to be spectacular to be at all noteworthy?

Yes they're still off centre strikes, the more of centre the more money they sell for, especially with the copper coins.
For some strange reason i really badly off centre threepence won't attract as much interest or as high of a price as a penny or h/penny that are not as far off centre, people just seem to have it in their head that it's only a tiny little coin so i'm not paying that much for it.
The slightly off centre coins, your lucky if you get a bid on them from what i've seen.

Ozcoins

I would keep ones that are out of the ordinary.

I would say that you would want a coin to be off centre by 2mm at least.

With off-centre coins, I usually keep the ones that are missing a fair bit of the rim, but always remember to check that it's not a partial or out of collar coin before discarding it.

A lot would depend on how it looks and condition also plays a part, but if it's only 1-2 mm off, I would probably discard it.

So sounds like 2mm is the threshold then?

If the edge of the coin, where the reeding is, is not correctly formed and the reverse/obverse shows signs of being "off centre", then in my opinion it is a keeper.

However, if one examines the coins from early 2000 up to the time the RAM got new coin presses, there were a lot of "off centre" coins by small amounts.

I think it depends on the reeding edge deform that is the clue.

Does the die sit in the collar? Is the diameter of the die greater than the diameter of the planchet? ie the collar slightlightly overlaps the die. I don't think I've seen a picture of a die, does it have lugs or similar to locate and hold it in the collar?
