Yeah they use couriers for bullion (which Auspost doesn't allow under any circumstance, even locally) so probably same story

What a find! How much did that go for? Chances of finding one in change would be miniscule.

The 2019 JC 50c bags and rolls have gone crazy, nothing under $250, and average ask seems to be over $400. What a world.

In All About the Coins of Australia the author says they are circulation figures and talks about the mythical 1992 $1 MOR w/ 8K circulation, suggesting those coins might have been produced in earlier years and borne earlier dates, but were only circulated and accounted for in 1992.

Seems rules are made to be broken.

Can see why they don't want to get stuck in the middle of a grading/damaged in transit dispute, or paying out missing letters which may or may not have contained valuable coins.

Yeah this is the problem, the mints numbers are circulation not production. They could be sitting on a ton.

Either way, I'm comfortable picking them up at $100 when others are paying $200. Bags seemed to trade at a premium even when they were readily available from the mint shop, can't explain that one.

Coin Chit Chat / International Shipping Prohibition
June 29, 2020, 08:13:52 PM
So today I found out that Australia Post will not ship coins and notes out of Australia ... I mean a quick look around that auction site says every man and his dog does it anyway ... but has anyone ever been hit with this nonsense? Either turned away at the post office, had a coin RTS, or had a claim rejected for a parcel that went missing?

Smells like anti-competitive behaviour, I bet the buggers ship their PNCs abroad.

Generally speaking, with all modern mint rolls limited to 5000, this is what's supposed to happen. With other issues asking huge premiums for both bags and rolls, I note Cotton and Co rolls (which can be created on demand) don't seem to attract any where near the same premium. $2 are also the safest rolls and bags to speculate on as their face value is the highest. Folks also like war issues and shiny things.

More specifically, this issue is sold out at the first 4 dealers on Google, and the 5th has one available for $280, so yeah the ones you mentioned are actually trading relatively on par with the limited quantity available elsewhere. It's also currently tying for 2nd lowest mintage circulating $2, but only half way through the year so that could change (see below). Freeze on coinswaps likely a factor too as Mister T says above.

I've just stocked up on 2019 $2 bags both JC and IRB - these are currently listed together on RAM site with just 0.47 circulation, final numbers pending in the 19/20 report, but chances are one of these two is going to be the lowest mintage ever, with the other second when the dust settles. Add to that the last/first of an era appeal and these look like a decent play. Most bags/rolls are priced crazy, but you can still find a few for $90 to $110 if you dig around.

Tl;dr it's markets 101, supply and demand, the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay sober etc
