Quote from: 'gnome' pid='108801' dateline='1495416412'Has it got a handle of some description on the back of it.

Just a plate, may have been attached to something in the past, no signs of that though.  Same size as the nedal, crown size.

Not a Medal but related.  I reckon it was used as a seal for official documents of the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition.

It still has remnants of coloured substances on its surface.

I have pictured it for comparision with the 1980 reproduction medal.

It would be nice to get confirmation of its usage and an image of a document where it was used, but the Museums etc aren't very helpful.

I've been intrigued with the 'Spur on 1st Leg of 2nd N' error for the past year.

Sometimes only a shadow this is such a common error afflicting many different years in the pre-Kangaroo penny era.  Some of the more highly affected coins also have other shadows or imprints elsewhere.

Today I came across one such penny, a 1924, with quite distinct markings.  Exhibit A.

I took a microscope photo and drew lines on the imprints and found that it was an imprint of a head.  Exhibit B.

I then overlaid the other side of the coin and there you have it. Exhibit C.

The 'Spur on 1st Leg of 2nd N' is an imprint of the space between the King's chin and his chest.
