The transfer process has started.  There will be some downtime in the next week or two but I am sure Terry will have it up and running quickly.

TKO-100, the admin from KOTCT has emailed me and offered to take over this forum.  We'll work through the logistics of doing so and keep you updated.  There will most likely be a few days where it's unavailable but hopefully it will be back on a new server!  I'll keep you updated.

I think this is the best suggestion.  Facebook has the capability for private groups.  I understand some people don't have Facebook but moving forward forums like this one will disappear, and groups on Facebook will only become more popular.

I'm not tech enough to consider even trying, let alone the $85 US a year to keep it up.
You could always try selling it on to one of those dodgy sites that fill it with adverts that have nothing to do with coin collecting.

Nah, we wouldn't do that.

Sorry to have to say this but I wish to step away from paying for and hosting this forum.  Currently the forum is hosted on a dedicated linode server and the domain/ssl is managed by namecheap.  I am prepared to push the linode server and the domain to a new owner who is willing to take it over.

The new owner will be up for the following costs:

US$5/ month for the linode server
US$15/ year for the domain name
US$10/ year for the SSL certificate.

Alternatively, if someone has an available apache/mysql webserver I can send them the backup files and they can get it up and running there.  I'll push the domain to the new owner and they'll be up for the yearly domain costs and their own web-server costs.

If no-one comes forward who is interested this forum will go off-line forever on the 31st of October, 2026.

I've increased the maximum file size and maximum image dimensions.  I am not sure where the server is in terms of disk space but that will be the next problem no doubt.

Forum Suggestions / RE: Forum into the future
June 12, 2025, 11:36:26 AM
I only come here when something goes wrong and usually read a few posts then.  That's about it, though.  That being said, I don't read coin groups on Facebook either.

From my point of view I am looking to divest myself of things that take up my time, and while this forum doesn't take up much of my time, it's still a few hours a year.  I'd be happy to hand it over to someone else, but in it's current state they'd need to know something about the administration of a Linux server.  There's a cost of course too, which I think is a couple of hundred a year for the server, SSL certificates, and domain registration.  It doesn't need to be run the same way as I do it, but any server it gets moved to needs PHP & MySQL to be able to run the forum software.

If no-one is willing to take it over then I'm happy to keep it going and cover the costs for the time being.  But there will be a point where I'm going to not want to do it anymore.

Testing and How-To / RE: site access latency
May 13, 2025, 10:53:09 AM
Thanks to the couple of people that contacted me through other means to let me know the site was down.  I rebooted the server which seems to have fixed things for now.  CPU usage is still an issue and I spent some time this morning trying to sort it out without any luck.

That would explain why I could not access site for some minutes last night.

Yes, sorry about that.  It happened right as dinner was served so it had to wait a few minutes while I ate.

Testing and How-To / RE: site access latency

There has been something using up the CPU on the forum server for the last couple of weeks.  This might have been causing the problem.  I've been unable to get to the bottom of it so I rebooted the server last night which of course broke something else but we're up and running now.

Nevol notified me that some people were not receiving emails or email PM notifications from the Forum.  I spent a few hours on the weekend looking into this.  There were a couple of server issues I fixed up that might see a few more emails get through.

However, after perusing the server logs it looks like some user's email services are rejecting forum emails because they are not digitally signed.  Forum emails are not digitally signed because this forum does not have a proper email server/service but rather uses the PHP mail() function to send emails.  A proper email service for this forum would cost $10-$15 per month plus the best part of a Sunday to set it all up properly.  At this point I'm not really interested in shelling out any more $$ on the forum just for the sake of email notifications.

For now you'll just have to log back into the forum periodically to check for PM's and so on.  Alternatively you could use a different email address for the forum.  Gmail emails seem to be getting through OK for example.

I am sorry for this but if you want to get cross at someone then get cross at spammers as these increased email rejection rates are due almost solely to the amount of spam flooding emails these days.

Forum Suggestions / RE: Increasing the forum usage
July 08, 2022, 10:55:48 AM
Trouble is that social media has supplanted forums.  There are many, many, many active coin groups on Facebook.  Their app has huge penetration and traction among users, compared with having to remember to log into forums and actually check them.

Forum Announcements and Rules / Server Downtime

Thanks to Nevol for contacting me through our Facebook page as the server had gone down.  Obviously it's back up now :)  I'll have a poke around the logs this weekend and see if I can find out what happened and try to stop it from happening again!
