Hi, newbie to this Forum. Thanks to Nancy. See photos 5c with 1/2 reeding of edge missing. My sons good eyes not mine - he does the 5c. for degree of difficulty would be hard to manufacture I reckon. Cheers ErikP[attachment=1823][attachment=1822][attachment=1821]
Hi ErikP, It looks like a partial collar, very nice find by the young fella, keep up the good work.
Welcome ErikP and a nice error find to start it off with. Weldone.
Welcome and Great find.!
Nice find! Scarce in the first place and made even harder by the fact that the 5c are so damn small and hard to see.
I'll be listing a 2002 5c with the same error on ebay tomorrow if youre interested in seeing what yours may potentially be worth let me know and i'll post a link here once ive listed it.
Great find Eric. :yahoo:
Well done to your son. You're very lucky to have a child to share the hobby with.
:welcome: to both of you! :wavemulticolor:

Yes Enworb would be appreciated I can then show Ben whats its worth and should grab his attention. then probably he'll noodle more and Age of Empires less. Thanks ErikP
There are two types of partial collar error, straight and tilted. Yours looks to be straight.
Cool find!
Partial Collar Error (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2009/05/out-of-collar-or-partial-collar-coin-errors.html)
Picture 1 looks like a groove has been cut into an otherwise complete rim.
If it was a partial straight collar shouldn't half the rim have no reeding?

I'd say Pic 1 is of 2 x 5c coins together, top one normal, the other is the one we are discussing.

Sorry. My mistake with that picture.
However I am still pretty sure this is not a partial collar error, and is PMD.
I wonder who else will notice why?
I might be wrong but I think I can see a raised edge.
Ozcoins, are you referring to the raised outer rim where the collar should have made it flat? ie: The side of the coin shows Milling, Flat then a raised bit at the edge (which should not be there).
It certainly looks like a genuine partial collar to me.
I am referring to the part missing the reeding being narrower than the past with the reeding.
The unreeded part should be wider than the reeded part as it squeezes wider than the collar.
Thanks for pointing that out ozcoins, a very good point ...... staring me right in the face.
Am I seeing things with the raised milling, sunken flat then raised?
The bit I was talking about is in pic #3 .... red milling, green sunken, blue raised.
It does appear that way to me too.

Hmm, you are correct.
I see that now. You must have good eyes ozcoins!!!!!!!!
Anyway i listed one. Non reeded part is wider than the reeded part.

Nice one enworb!
Actually, I shouldnt be saying that if I am at all interested in bidding on it should I??
:-)
Good luck with the sale.
Hi All. Thanks for the discussion. I'll try to photo the edge a bit better alongside other 5c but I think your right its lower than where its milled. So how does a flat groove get made like that? Regards ErikP
Hi. Weird. Looking at same coin for 2 hours. See photos. If I place another 5c against it and rotate whislt peering with my sons scope it looks as though one side is grooved or slotted inwards. ie lower than whats been milled. As rotate the coin the level of metal gradually raises to meet the milling on the opposite side. 2 photos show similar view with coin on another from opposite sides with milling easily seen from one side but not the other. The other 3 shots show the high side from different angles. Thoughts? Thanks ErikP
Yes I know stop looking at the coin. Just another comment I think the coin must have been on an angle when it was milled because on one side the milling almost meets the edge but on the opposite side doesnt make half way. Regards Erik P
I cant explain it for sure, but it looks a little like a "drier coin", only the pressure has only been put on half of the coin, and not centered perfectly around the radius of the coin.
What do others think?
Have you weighed it?
Fulvio, not weighed I'll go to the local jeweller to check, thanks ErikP
[attachment=1940][attachment=1941]Hi, back to the 2003 5c. Jeweller said his opinion coin was manufactured as it is and not subsequent damage. It weighed 2.86 grams so is slightly above McDonalds Book specification at 2.83 grams. I have done some more photos of obverse and a rim that shows reeding rising above the flat area adjacent. Regards ErikP
Hmmmm.... This is one of those mysteries calling out for more information methinks. It doesn't sound milled, yet the unstruck part isn't bigger, like it should be. And from the pics it doesn't look like a filled die. So how did it come about???
Regardless, its still a nice find IMO.
Gidday Fulvio dunno I'm not an expert. Took to another Jeweller to weigh and was 2.87 grams think the weights are accurate. So it hasn't lost metal compared with specification weight. Regards ErikP
I reckon you need to take it to someone other than a jeweller to look at. Your profile doesn't say where you are.. are there any coin shops nearby, or possibly other forum members?
Fulvio, yes I've had emails from people to follow same suggestion. Can find members nearby shall do, cheers ErikP
