Title: What Do YOU Collect?
Post by: naomi_j86 on September 24, 2012, 07:52:01 AM
So what is it that makes you contemplate selling your first-born for?
Decimal?
Wavy's?
Pre-Decimal?
PNCs?

For me, it's $1 coins. Gosh they make me happy! I love being at work sifting through the $1 coins and finding one that's 'not supposed to be there' (a NCLT $1).

That has also helped me find my beloved mules!

Hi Naomi, Error Coins is a favourite of mine,i love getting a really spectacular error to add to my collection, having said that though i also love a really nice unblemished coin to upgrade my existing collection.
I have a multitude of 1964 dated coins as that is my birth year, probably not a great investment but thats not why i collect them.:ok:

I also love error coins, not so much that I'd give up either of my kids for them, but  they are my main focus lately. :icon_e_biggrin:

Mainly Australian coins, but also other Commonwealth stuff.
Not really into error coins though.

Mainly $1s. But I also have a large collection of rolls, world coins and errors

Aussie coins mostly, with a soft spot for varieties as well as the odd error, but not into damage. Having said this, one of my favorites is a 1971 British 2 new pence minted on a cupro nickel planchet?

Aussie and some world error coins. Wrong planchets, mules, large die breaks, brockages, indents, DDRs and DDOs.

Whatever captures my eye.  I find myself drawn in by eye appeal and scarcity.  World coins and Aussie stuff as long as it's pretty, mostly raw, occasionally slabbed.  I still pick up some errors but they have to very unusual or exceptionally high grade to get me interested these days.

I collect 1966 stuff, anything and everything to do with the changeover from medallions to retail promotional conversion tables and material to glassware and even tea towels. This is what i enjoy the most.

Anything high grade with colour catches my eye pre-decimal and decimal. I've begun a GB farthing collection and a NZ threepence collection but generally choose high quality over a coin just because I don't have one for that year. Hence i have a lot of 1964 pennies.

I am a sucker for a top quality error and indents are my favourite. I also have a complete dollar collection including all mintmarks but i only keep that up to date because i have to now, there are just too many releases and the quality is not there.

I do not collect anything from the perth mint unless it's under bullion!!

I collect coins: Australian and foreign, ancient medieval and modern. Banknotes Australian and World too, though not as heavily as coins. I also have a small collection of tokens, medals and other "fringe" numismatic objects.

I started collecting australian predecimal coins, then I ventured into aussie decimals, errors and varieties, australian notes, both predecimal and decimal, american, new guinea, new zealand, english,  Queen Victoria, counterfeit coins, some miscellaneous world coins, and I am taking a look casino chips and tokens.
I'm pretty sure I have missed some as well.
Used to be RAM items, such as wedding sets and pnc's, but not so much nowadays.  Occassionally I still venture into the 50c and $1.
I don't have any full sets of anything finished, which makes it still interesting.

I have an exceptionally narrow focus, and collect GB sixpences dated 1867 or 1868. I bought my first in 1975, and still haven't completed the set, because I collect by combination of rev die number (27 is the highest recorded) and obverse die (there are two).

The attraction is that, while it is certain that all combinations of 27 die numbers and 2 obv dies for each of the 2 years were not minted, there are no official records as to what was actually produced. I have 48 of the possible combinations, and from contact over the years with other (equally mad!) collectors around the world I know of 5 other combinations where just a single example is known. Presumably others were minted, but I just haven't found them yet!

Why do I collect such a limited field? Because the period covers the change in the obverse die, from the die used up until 1866, to the die used from 1869 onwards, but the major catalogues (originally Seaby, now Spink) don't acknowledge the fact that 1867 and 1868 exist with both obverse dies.

That is a very specialized field. I have just 1 x 1868, so badly worn the date is barely legible and it's possible there could be a 9 above the date, but even with my Microscope, I'm not sure.

:welcome: to TACF.

1868 (9) exists with both obverses, and I have both.

Does English Silver Coinage cover these varieties?

I mainly collect Australian decimal and pre decimal coins.
I have full sets of everything but none are completed (There will always be an upgrade out there somewhere).
One of my main passions are the 1927, 1951 and the 1954 commemorative florins, these are very difficult to get in ms-64/ Choice UNC or better.
My absolute favourite Pre decimal coin is the 1927 Canberra florin.
I also collect NCLT silver and none silver coins and have a decent collection of them and am working on getting them all.
I also collect US and Canadian coins and have a few completed sets of these.
I find this challenging because it is quite hard to get US and Canadian coins in Aus

I am of the opinion that coins like these should be put in hermetically sealed slabs.
These mind-blowing beautiful colours are a result of corrosion/reaction with pollutants in the air (mainly sulphur) and if they can be totally sealed from further reaction should remain in this condition a whole lot longer.
This particular florin is at the moment a “Snapshot in Time" and in my opinion is as beautiful as a Canberra florin can ever get.
If not looked after with great care they will eventually turn black and awful.
These stunning types of coins are like a beautiful flower, when they are in this condition they are in "full bloom" and eventually they will wither and die over the decades.
Let’s hope that we can come up with a procedure that can halt this and preserve these coins in all their splendour.

Thank you for shareing this coin with us PP and Markin,
Truly a beutiful coin:dance:

Mister T, I have responded via a new thread in the World Coins area, so as to avoid this thread drifting any further off the subject

I collect decimal coins - and those of the type that can generally be found in circulation.  One cent, two cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty cents, fifty cents, one or two dollars - they are all good.  But some are better than others.  I actually prefer the 2 cents, twenty cents and one dollar - closely followed by the fifty cents.  These are the coins that I buy for the pure pleasure and fun.

That said, I also buy for invenstment purposes.  Pre-decimal notes, decimal specimen notes, wavy twenty, no SD 2 cents, mules and such like.  All in the best quality that I can afford.

I recall someone else collecting Japanese swords. Was that you under a different forum name, or on another forum?
