Title: A Weekend of Noodling
Post by: purplepennyhunter on April 14, 2013, 02:33:02 PM
I have a customer who is very excited that she's going to tile her bathroom floor with bright and shiny new 1c pieces ex roll. Photos to come once the job is done............

She allowed us to open her rolls, all 70 of them, that's 3,500 coins to make sure there wasn't anything more interesting contained in the rolls.

Now there might have been bright lustrous gem uncirculated:
clipped planchets
rotated double strikes
flip-over double strikes
indents
brockages
split planchets
planchet peels
strike through's
die break's
cuds
foreign planchets
wrong planchets
coin struck on a washer!!!

You can image what's going though my head whilst we open and noodle 70 rolls.

What we actually found......out of 3,500 brand new shiny coins...
1 tiny planchet peel
2 oily dies
1 piddly wannabe ramstrike (very good considering anything larger would have got rejected by the rolling machine)

Very dissapointing really, the coins were just too nice:(

I didn't ask too many questions. They'll be stuck  down onto some sort of mesh first. Then finished I guess with some sort of resin or something, they should hold their lustre then?? something like this (http://www.notcot.com/archives/2009/06/floor-of-pennie.php)

I get a little shudder down my back when I see people doing this sort of things to coins :dash1:
I can't help myself PP. Money should be spent or collected not abused in this fashion:angel:
I have myself been guilty of buggering up the occasional coin in the interest of showing how PMD  happens on a coin, But this is simply Mass Murder in my view :dodgy:

3500 one cent coins. That equals $35.00 for a night "On the Tiles". Cheap at twice the price.!!

I've seen error coins gold plated etc before, so I thought it best check them first. Imagine if she "tiled" a brockage......

What I really cannot understand is why use nice coins from rolls when she could have used crappy worn coins destined for the scrap dealer instead.
I imagine that this "Person" has bought some Wedding sets to highlight the design as well :dash1:

I had a lady bought every 1988 50¢ I could get for quite some months. She was getting them for her husband who was using them for a mural of HMS Endeavour.
Never did find out the end result. let alone get a picture. Pity; it could have been stunning if done well.

Jeff
PS. Any 1968 in that noodling lot?

the sad thing is , once the gov get the money for them , they don't care what you do with them , . it is just a business to them ..

Blame the mint for this. She probably went to Canberra and walked up the coin staircase before deciding to murder those coins.

130 Million minted, what's 3500 in the name of Art. Recycling at its purest, even Rundle Mall in Adelaide has coins set into the footpath. Prefer this to scrap bins or Silver scrap. (melted down they are definitely gone forever )

Quote130 Million minted
That may be the case , but what is the survival rate of pristine rolled coins:angel:

Survival rate of 1979 rolls is HUGE. There will never be a shortage. I think they would look great as a floor or wall.

isn't it 3 for an oz of silver?
in the late 70's silver was about $50 oz I think
well worth melting back then, for sure

good on you
I only have a few but love them bits
I finally got myself a proof version as well

I love the design and that it is round
never taken to the 8 sided or whatever it is, modern 50c

I still remember the hype about old people not being able to tell that it was a 50c and not 2 bob
baloney - it was to change the design and metal to save/make the gov. $$ by the silver recall and remelt

though, I do think that the $2 coin was problematic for older people

you could have made about $3,283 for those coins back then?
could have nearly  bought yourself a small house with that!

Now you are talking RG:yahoo:
I agree the round coin was more suited to the COA design and the proof coin is simply a beautiful piece :wavemulticolor:

A few years ago, silver price went as high as $48.00 something before the AU$ started it rapid rise.

I believe that three 1966 50c pieces equivilates to 1 oz of silver.

I am still in the market for these coins regardless of the condition.

I said to much , he said [  well mate ] they are worth $ 17 ea  but they are the only 2  we have left so they are going cheap , so I walked away ,, .    ,, kel ,,

Nope, $17 each is far above market value for the coin and silver.   Me, i'd no more than $7 max at this time.

Big name dealer in Melbourne this morning was buying at $5.50.

if the dealer was getting them for $ 5.50 each  , he should know they came from a house robbery ,or something like that ,
and he also should be charged with receiving stolen property ,

no one in their right mind would sell for that price of
$ 5.50 ea ..unless he got them for nothing ..

You would think that the dealer would be happy to pay spot for these and not a lousy $16.50 per OZ, I doubt very much the this dealer would be selling at this low price and is just taking advantage of people.
A lot like them dodgy gold buyers that plague the US :dodgy:
