Title: 1973 20c strange mark
Post by: stevo1962 on April 12, 2013, 08:07:49 PM
This 1973  20c has a strange indentation(bottom right) which looks like the start of a drill hole.Does anyone know what this is?

Perhaps struck through a tiny blob of grease.

I have what looks like a perfect 1964 penny (well it does to me) and on the Queens jawline there is a mark that is really similar to that on your 20c field

for the life of me I haven't been able to figure out what it is

i 'll try to dig up a pic -

Appears to be a struck through error.
From what I've seen most of these errors are on the obverse which I believe is the bottom die so therefore much more prone to stuff falling onto it.

yeah it's a knock out - picture doesn't do the penny full justice

it's like that 20c - all glossy and just jumps out at you from the page
but this darn mark on her jawline has been driving me nuts

i'll see if the guys concurr that it's that same as Steves' coin
'i'll be pleased to have an explaination that is for sure

i had thoughts that it may have been a collapsed planchet bubble or die bubble
learn something everyday here
cheers robbie

Definitely strikethroughs. I regard them as quite collectible, and have everything from oil to grains of dirt to bits of hair, fluff and wire. After you've seen a few they're really easy to differentiate from post-mint damage. The bottom die is more susceptible obviously, but you do get strikethroughs on both sides, sometimes even on the same coin.

Oh, and its a bonus if the offending object is still embedded in the coin, but that only really happens on UNC specimens.

Here's the coolest strike-through I've seen.  Struck through a spring that's still there.

That's pretty awesome, Mark. Here's one I just found a few minutes ago:

Hard to tell about George's neck, but some of the lines in the lettering look raised rather than indented. Does the coin have multiple problems?

Hi Fulvio
Nice coin there - I have a penny with what looks like wire but can't find the pic\here 2 shots of my KGVI with the steel wool looking pattern
does appear to have quite a scatter of light dies cracks on the obverse, so it was probably getting the end of the life for that die

That nickel struck through the spring is up for sale on a US site for about $8k.  A bit pricey for me :)  Here's the best strike through that PPH and I have.  We believe it was struck through a crescent shaped piece of planchet.  Perhaps the moon shaped bit that is left over when an elliptical clipped planchet is formed.

This one:

And there's this threepence which has been struck through a folded scrap of metal.  Perhaps part of a planchet.

Gorgeous, both of them.

Why is it I can never find anything remotely like that on UNC coins? Only the most used and abused, usually with cancer, malicious damage, or both. :(

hi fulvio  , same here , I have never found any coin with a stand out error on it ,. maybe we don't have the right connections ,

The 20c struck through wire came off of eBay.  The threepence struck through debris came off of eBay.  The struck through florin came from a dealers book at a Melbourne ANDA a few years ago.  There's no black magic in finding these coins, you just need to look, search, keep looking, keep searching, and then look some more.  And be patient.

LOL! You guys are funny... :)

After going through my backlog of $2, $1 and 50¢, I've got maybe $800 to bank, and perhaps 200 "keepers". Those break down into aUNC, "common" errors, and a small handful of "finds"... things like planchet flaws, die cracks, that strikethrough... but all of the good stuff has pretty major damage of one sort or another, whereas a lot of what I'm throwing back is in really, really good nick.

Why couldn't the good stuff be the ones in top condition, and the rejects crappy instead of the other way around?

CURSE YOU, MURPHY, AND YOUR LAW! ;)
